Ilhan Omar Deportation Calls Grow From Republicans

Source: Newsweek

Conservatives are calling for Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar to be deported over comments she allegedly made about Somalia.

Omar, a Somali American and Muslim, sparked a backlash after a clip of the lawmaker's recent remarks to Somali American constituents went viral on X, formerly Twitter.

In the remarks, Omar addressed the deal struck by Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland with landlocked Ethiopia to give it access to the sea.

According to the translation of her remarks first shared on X by Ambassador Rhoda J. Elmi, Somaliland's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Omar purportedly said that she was "Somalian first, Muslim second" and "here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system."

Saying Somalian first was a dumb thing. She could have worded this differently. She can advocate for the interests of Somalia without saying "Somalian first". It makes it sound like the reason she is in congress is to protect the interests of Somalia. Sometimes those interests are not consistent with what is best for the US.

I'm not familiar with the Somalialand issue. Don't know even know what the US role in the issue is. I don't blame her for advocating for this issue, even if it goes against what the US is doing. The US keeps supporting Azerbaijan and us Armenians keep complaining.

However, I certainly won't vote for Kennedy because that is who the ANCA is endorsing..LOL The ANCA supports Armenian issues over pragmatic. Of course Armenian issues are important to me, but they aren't that important.

And with regards to foreign affairs there is often disagreement in Congress anyway. Doesn't make anyone more or less patriotic. (Unless someone files a completely ridiculous bill, that makes Putin or the Ayatollah an equal ally or something real weird like that. I guess if she filed a bill in support of pirates and Houthis, it would really rattle everyone, but she hasn't done this)

She is only once voice out of 535, so she doesn't have much sway.

Of course, deporting her is a stupid idea. Or even saying it they want to deport is stupid

Trump could have tried that if he wanted way back in 2019.

We're a nation of laws. You can't deport someone (revoke citizenship) via an executive order.

Most cases of revocation have occurred in the court system in conjunction with criminal trials and is usually in the punishment phase of a criminal trial. Usually these trials involving drug cartels and/or terrorism. We rarely hear about these revocations because the crimes are usually pretty heinous.

Omar hasn't broken any laws.

She has been made a scapegoat by the right. It doesn’t matter if she is breaking laws. She will be one of the first elected prominent US reps to be deported once these fanatics fully take control. Again, she won’t be the last. Giving any credibility to statements like the one above is only adding fuel to that possibility.

Indeed, the term “Somalian” is not used by Somalis, who prefer the term “Somali.”

A devout Muslim like Omar would have faced outrage from the largely Muslim audience had she placed her religion second, according to one translator.

During the remarks in question, Omar spoke of the unity of the Somali people: “Somalis are people who love each other. It’s possible that we might sometimes have disagreements but we are also people who can rely on each other. We are people who are siblings. We are people with courage. We are people who know that they are Somali and Muslim. We are people who support each other.”

In an email to the Reformer, Omar said the attacks are “disingenuous attempts to malign my character and question my loyalty to my home, America.”

she might have said American first, Muslim second? And maybe the rwnj would get a clue and realize it is American first, Christianity second.

I don't see a lot wrong with Rep. Omar reminding that specific audience of her roots. I grew up hearing the adult neighbors reminding people of their roots, mainly in Europe. I know now that it wasn't just that we lived in an all white neighborhood, but at the time, few Black Americans knew what country their ancestors had come from. When I grew up, we America's population was called a melting pot. With a resurgence of national pride, some pundits prefer the term salad bowl. I think the country was more cohesive as a fondue than as crudites.

You are well-informed of your reps. I've only seen/heard a couple of her interviews on MSNBC, just to see what I think. Around Cleveland, Oh, where I grew up, there were German, Slovakian, Serbian, Russian and so many other associations that were based on culture or country of origin. The members celebrated their roots, and I was thinking if Rep. Omar was at a gathering like that, it wouldn't be out of line to say something like that. But Dems are held to a higher standard. A rwnj can say things similar, even on the House floor and get a pass.

I wouldn't like it if Rep. Omar said something like this on the House floor.

But deportation? Nope.

If she wants to advocate for her home country as an American citizen, she is entitled to. If what is best for America is truly NOT a priority for her, she should resign from the US Congress.

I am assuming she was actually doing something quite common by politicians running for re-election that is called pandering. She was telling a group of voters what they want to hear to energize them to vote for her. She went too far, in my opinion. She needs to answer for what she said.

I hate pandering and being pandered to.

When we moved to our current house I received two ads from the same candidate...one ad targeting seniors saying property taxes were too high, schools were wasting valuable money on upgrades...the other ad was targeting young families saying how access to a great education is what made our community strong and increased property values and they would continue to fight for strong education! I just shook my head and voted for someone else.

Both parties do this and I hate it!

If there is audio, native speakers should be able to translate in English pretty darn close to what she said.

I would not be surprised if the true translation is somewhere in the middle. More like - as a Somali and Muslim, I will fight for Somalia and Muslim concerns while in Congress. And then discussions went from there. Does it mean she doesn't care about American interests, nah...but did she dissuade her audience from believing that as a Somali and Muslim she will put their interests above other constituents? Probably not.

Not treasonous, put unfortunately in today's political climate, she will be forced to explain what she actually meant. Is that fair? No. But best to get it out of the way.

Tue Jan 30, 2024, 01:57 PM

In a charged address at a Minneapolis hotel, Representative Ilhan Omar claimed an unprecedented influence over U.S. policy regarding the Somaliland-Ethiopian Naval Base Agreement. Omar, facing increased scrutiny due to her recent removal from the Congressional Foreign Relations Committee, stirred further controversy by referring to Somalilanders as “Somali imposters” These blatantly racist remarks, delivered with fervent nationalism, have prompted concerns about her suitability in handling international matters.

-snip-

In an unusual congratulatory note to Somalian President Hassan Sh Mohamoud for opposing the MoU, Omar proclaimed, “Somalia is Somali, Somalia is one, we are brothers, and our lands are indivisible.” Her reference to “missing lands that we should be getting back,” including the Northern Kenyan territory of NFD and the Ethiopian Somali region, echoes back to the irredentism of the dictatorial regime of Siad Barre, which contributed to the downfall of the Somali Republic.

It’s noteworthy that Ilhan Omar’s apparent adherence to the destructive Somali ideology is linked to the late dictator Siad Barre, under whose regime Omar’s father served. Barre’s brutal dictatorship was marked by egregious human rights violation that culminated in the massacre of tens of thousands of Somalilanders by the very regime whose Omar father has served, raising concerns about Omar’s ties to a dark chapter in Somalia’s history.

Maybe she did.

What does maybe even mean here? Her comments were a direct translation by accredited journalists.

Maybe there are semantic subtleties. Maybe supporters and detractors are grasping for advantage.

But these issues sure do follow her.

From your Minnesota Reformer link (the quotation is Minnesota Reformer's translation of Representative Omar's remarks):

During her recent speech, Omar spoke assertively about her role in American foreign affairs, despite lacking any formal role in foreign policy; she was removed from the House Committee on Foreign Affairs last year by Republicans for what she has said were trumped-up charges of antisemtism.

“When I heard that people who call themselves Somalis signed an agreement with Ethiopia, many people reached out to me and said I needed to talk to the U.S. government. They asked, ‘What would the U.S. government do?’ My answer was that the U.S. government will do what we tell the U.S. government to do. That is the confidence we need to have as Somalis.”
