Teamsters and Trump disagree on immigration at endorsement meeting

Source: Politico

Former President Donald Trump said the Southern border needs to be closed because it is an existential crisis for unions, at the International Brotherhood of Teamsters headquarters on Wednesday.

Teamsters President Sean O'Brien said he disagrees.

"Most people need it closed down," Trump said of the border. "People feel differently about different things, but the unions and the Teamsters, if they don't have it closed down, they're not going to exist. They're not going to be able to exist."

O'Brien, who met with Trump twice this month to discuss organized labor, disagreed. He said he doesn't support a shutdown of the border, adding "we are all products of immigration."

And this is from NBC's report on the meeting.

“Our members want to hear from all candidates of all parties about what they plan to do for working people as President,” O’Brien said in a statement before Wednesday's roundtable.

O’Brien added that the union’s members are “essential to every trade industry in this country” and don’t all fall into one political alignment.

“Our members are working in all 50 states and represent every political background, including no affiliation,” O’Brien said. “Our union wants every candidate to know that there are 1.3 million Teamsters nationwide whose votes will not be taken for granted. Workers’ voices must be heard.”

Despite Trump’s move to meet with the Teamsters and garner union support, Biden has already succeeded in earning endorsements from a handful of unions for the 2024 race, including the United Auto Workers last week.

He's got shitstain45's number and he is doing a good job of being the fair minded union leader while also showing everybody what a louse the shitstain is.

I have been a fan since he easily got bubbamarkwayne to think he was going to get into an actual brawl at a Senate hearing which exposed bubbamarkwayne as the idiot magat that he is.

I am glad he removed one complaint platform right off the bat and met with the idiot and be done with it. Next week, the Teamsters will be endorsing Biden.

ETA: I bet he's from Southy too.

Why should he not meet with an opposition leader? Refusing to meet is easily framed as too fearful to meet.

Trust me, this is the way to handle Teamsters. Like the proverbial horses they’re named for, they need to be led into the stable and not left to wander in whenever the details of democracy become too attractive to resist.

Which is usually never. 🤣

Doesn't mean they'll have any common ground. O'Brien appears to be a reformer within Teamsters and was supported by TDU, Teamsters for a Democratic Union.
