Ukraine claims it has sunk another Russian warship in the Black Sea using high-tech sea drones

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine claimed Tuesday it has sunk another Russian warship in the Black Sea using high-tech sea drones as Kyiv’s forces continue to take aim at targets deep behind the war’s front line. Russian authorities did not confirm the claim.

The Ukrainian military intelligence agency said a special operations unit destroyed the large patrol ship Sergey Kotov overnight with Magura V5 uncrewed vessels that are designed and built in Ukraine and laden with explosives. The patrol ship, which Ukraine said was hit near the Kerch Strait, reportedly can carry cruise missiles and around 60 crew.

The Ukrainian claim could not immediately be independently verified, and disinformation has been a feature of the fighting that broke out after Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.

Kyiv’s forces are struggling to keep the better-provisioned Russian army at bay at some points along the largely static 1,500-kilometer (930-mile) front line, but are also taking aim at targets deep beyond the battlefield.

It's not impossible that our ships can be vulnerable. See the USS COLE for example.

When it comes to a Carrier Battle Group, some of the escort ships are there to take one for the carrier if necessary, but we also rely on the FAFO doctrine.

Some people don't understand the power of the United States Navy. There is NO Navy in the world, not Russia, not China, not even the combined NATO Navies...NONE...that can match the capability, power projection, worldwide sustainability/resupply and technology of the US Navy.

Major damage to a US Aircraft Carrier, would be met with such an overwhelming response, that any attack on one would be almost unthinkable. That is how important a CVN Battle Group is to US foreign policy.

With the help of the Air Force, the United States Navy could turn the entire water surface area of the earth into a "No-Fly, No-Sail, No-Go" zone.

A fishing boat from Bass Pro Shops wouldn't be safe to put in the water.

Don't underestimate the FAFO doctrine.

The Soviet Union did not compartmentalize their ships with reinforced bulkheads to nearly the same extent as western navies and so all else being equal they lose more buancy from each hit because each compartment is larger.

I also question how well trained Russian ship crews are in damage control. Firefighting and flood control are drilled extensively in most western navies.

at freaking republicans who've cut off funds to Ukraine. The people of Ukraine deserve so much more than they're getting from the U.S.

These traitorous bastards might as well be paying aid to Russia. They're playing right into Putin's hands, and it pisses me off! 🤬

I hope the republican party dies a slow and painful death for allowing Trump to hijack it. Of course they want to kill democracy in the U.S. so why would they want Ukraine to succeed?
