The Education Department will impose a record $14 million fine on Liberty University, department officials announced Tuesday, for violations of federal law on campus safety.
Liberty must also spend $2 million on campus safety improvements in addition to the money it has already budgeted for Clery operations during a two-year post-review monitoring period, the department said.
Students, faculty, and staff deserve to know that they can be safe and secure in their school communities. We respond aggressively to complaints about campus safety and security, said Rich Cordray, the chief operating officer of the Federal Student Aid Office of the Education Department. Through the Clery Act schools are obligated to take action that creates safe and secure campus communities, investigate complaints, and responsibly disclose information about crimes and other safety concerns. We will continue to hold schools accountable if they fail to do so.
The department released a more-than-100-page report on the findings of its review of Liberty, a private university in Lynchburg, Va..n More than 90,000 students study at Liberty University. It is one of the most influential Christian universities in the country and frequently draws high-profile speakers to its campus.

Liberty University will face a $16 million penalty for creating a culture where students were afraid to report when they suffered sexual violence.
The financial sanction, announced on Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Education, is the largest of its kind.
Through todays action against Liberty, we're sending the message that we will hold schools accountable if they fail to follow the important requirements of the Clery Act, said Richard Cordray, the head of the agencys Federal Student Aid office.
In addition to a $14 million fine, the Christian university will be required to spend $2 million over the next two years for on-campus safety improvements and compliance enhancements. And it will be under federal monitoring through April 2026. The agency conducted its investigation under the Clery Act, a federal law that requires universities to track crimes on their campus and warn students of danger.

(2,878 posts)Lawsuits by former students and employees have accused the school of botching sexual assault reports or failing to investigate allegations of rape. The litigation was filed under under Title IX, the federal law that protects against sex discrimination in education and often overlaps with Clery.
Liberty settled a civil lawsuit filed by 12 women women last year after they accused the school of fostering an unsafe environment and mishandling cases of sexual assault and harassment.
The women alleged that Libertys strict honor code made it difficult or impossible for students to report sexual violence. It said the university had a tacit policy of weighting investigations in favor of accused male students, and it said the university retaliated against women who did make such reports.
