Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona says she won't seek reelection, avoiding a 3-way race

PHOENIX (AP) — Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona announced on Tuesday that she won’t run for a second term after her estrangement from the Democratic Party left her politically homeless and without a clear path to reelection.

Sinema’s announcement comes after Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan bill to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border and deliver military aid to Ukraine and Israel — a deal that Sinema spent months negotiating. She had hoped it would be a signature achievement addressing one of Washington’s most intractable challenges as well as a powerful endorsement for her increasingly lonely view that cross-party dealmaking remains possible.

But in the end, Sinema’s border-security ambitions, and her career in Congress, were swallowed by the partisanship that has paralyzed Congress. “I love Arizona and I am so proud of what we’ve delivered,” she said in a video posted to social media. “Because I choose civility, understanding, listening, working together to get stuff done, I will leave the Senate at the end of this year.”

Sinema’s decision avoids a three-way contest in one of the most closely watched 2024 Senate races. That hard-to-forecast scenario had spawned fierce debate among political operatives about whether one major party would benefit in the quest for the Senate majority. Most analysts agreed Sinema had faced significant, likely insurmountable hurdles if she had decided to run.

Sinema, a middle school mean girl, delivered for Mitch McConnell...her ridiculous "look at me/look at me" outfits (a cross between Minnie Mouse (pre-pants)/Betty Boop/Cruella de Vil), her Senate buffoonery, teaming up with Joe Manchin to derail Biden's agenda, and abandoning her party/her constituents defined her and was her downfall...she will not be missed

those funds?

IMO that's maybe what explains her silly, one-term Senate career where she torpedoed her own party's agenda so often.

She must've gotten rich and knew she had no chance at getting re-elect after the bait-and-switch actions she took against her party.

I talked with him at length last year on a number of subjects, hope to meet up again next month in DC. What he knows, he knows well, and what he doesn't know, he is aware of it, and is willing to learn. I see him serving three terms at least, and he should make a great Arizona Democratic Senate team with Mark Kelly.

To some, it seems that the current GOP strategy is relatively new, starting with obstruction in the Obama era or the era of Trump. It's not new, of course. It's the Gingrich playbook taken to new extremes. Gingrich learned from Lee Atwater and others.

The Contract on America lives.

Representative Newt Gingrich of Georgia was a rising star in the GOP by 1987, either despite or because of his aggressive political tactics toward other members. Almost as soon as the Georgian had entered the House in 1979, he began making ethics charges against colleagues for alleged improprieties, notably against Barney Frank and Charles C. Diggs. In addition to personally spearheading these investigations, he transformed the speech of the political right from pointed rhetoric to sheer vitriol, referring to past and present Democratic speakers of the House as “crooks,” “traitors,” and “thugs.” This kind of personal attack against the opposition and even fellow Republicans would be seen again and again in the rise of other ambitious politicians in the years ahead.

At 12:01p on January 3rd.. KS will finally disappear. I am sure there will be antics, but I look forward to never giving her another thought.

The political career of Sinema will be the standard on which all political sell outs will be compared. What a profound disappointment she was. She bet on the GOP compromising! Gosh darn she was a fool. She gave up her party, potential and place in history for nothing!.. but a wad of cash. There will never be a political sell out like her. At a time when women's rights and voting rights were taking a huge hit, she was awol. Worse than that, she started supporting the other team! She could have been a leader.

I hope other Democrats who are watching this truly see the reality. IF you abandon your party and publicized beliefs, you will be ousted. She was even betting on moderation from so called AZ independents.. Fool I say! I suspect many independents in AZ are fairly conservative and are either Libertarian in beliefs or are embarrassed being associated with state GOP.

While she loves to bash Dems, and Fox loves that.. I believe she will not do a TV gig. Her history is running from the media and she was very rarely on network news shows as a commentator. I don't know enough about lobbying, but who will take her calls?

I think she will chill and enjoy her wine. Maybe a college type gig? She did keep teaching while she was a senator. Is that enough attention for her?

I think her future is writing a book. Then she will time the release for 2028 election. She will go with the both sides suck babble - in a none incumbent election. She will travel the US running as an independent FOR PRESIDENT - promoting her book at every stop. That jives with her ego and exaggerated view of self worth. The book will be spicy and have lots of bits to get media attention. This is her way of getting attention and converting that old campaign money to book sales.
