Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips is ending his long shot challenge to President Joe Biden in the Democratic primary, having failed to win any notable traction among voters with his message that the party needs a younger nominee.

"I'm going to suspend my campaign, and I will be right now endorsing President Biden. The choices are so clear ... we only have two of them, and it's going to be Donald Trump or Joe Biden," Phillips said on Wednesday afternoon in a radio interview.

The decision comes after Biden won the congressman's home state of Minnesota on Super Tuesday as well as the elimination of his staff ahead of the Michigan primary late last month, a state Phillips hoped to do well in.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

In 2011, I hosted then VP Biden at my home. Most notable was his empathy and kindness to my daughters and the catering staff, with whom he sat and had ice cream (surprise-surprise). His decency and wisdom were rarities in politics then, and even more so today.

Probably would follow up with: “I haven’t left the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party left me”.

He is a fellow member of the Democratic party. It is good to have options and variety of ideas - it pushes the party forward.

He had no policy differences from Biden or the party so he brought no new ideas. It was just another rich guy’s vanity project.

who were running against each other for the CA Senate seat, and who come from all perspectives of the party BUT who despite throwing barbs at each other, didn't try to throw the party (and the President) under the bus with RW talking points (idiotic "age" thing).

with Republican talking points (Biden is too old!) and the worst kind of both-siderism.

Asked by a reporter this week whether he believed Biden was a threat to democracy, Phillips answered, “Yes.”

Dropping out and endorsing the president is a good starting point for Philips, but earning back any respect for his intelligence and judgement is going to take more than that.

I ran for Congress in 2018 to resist Donald Trump, I was trapped in the Capitol in 2021 because of Donald Trump, and I ran for President in 2024 to resist Donald Trump again - because Americans were demanding an alternative, and democracy demands options.

But it is clear that alternative is not me. And it is clear that Joe Biden is OUR candidate and OUR opportunity to demonstrate what type of country America is and intends to be.

To all who supported my effort, thank you. We will continue the important work to ensure a more responsive, democratic, and generationally diverse political system. But today, in light of the stark reality we face, I ask you join me in mobilizing, energizing, and doing everything you can to help keep a man of decency and integrity in the White House. That's Joe Biden.

Let's lead with invitation, not confrontation, to welcome Haley supporters, Trump supporters, and Uncommitted supporters to get this done. It's our calling, it's our legacy, and it's our time. Onward with joy and patriotism.
