Hochul deploys National Guard for subway bag checks amid rising crime numbers
Source: CBS News
NEW YORK -- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a new subway safety plan Wednesday, following several violent incidents underground in the past week and rising subway crime numbers so far this year.
"Anyone looking to do harm or spread fear on our subways, you will be caught, plain and simple. There will be consequences. This has to end. New Yorkers deserve no less," Hochul said. "To those who are feeling anxious whenever they walk through those turnstiles, we will stop at nothing to keep you safe, you and your family members, and restore your peace of mind."
The governor laid out a five-point approach that includes:
Adding 750 National Guard members and 250 MTA and State Police officers to help with random bag searches
Working to change the law to stop people who commit violent transit crimes from riding subways and buses

(5,797 posts)Why not just allow the powers to water down the 4th amemdment more, Mal?
I mean, we're only three or four steps from a full police state anyway (and I lived in two police states).

(68 posts)Sending the state troopers and National Guard to help with reducing crime in NYC's subways is really more of a "show of force" to deter people with ulterior motives. The same approach was used in the airports after 9/11 when state troopers carried their usual weapons and the National Guard carried M-16s and other weapons. Give them a week or so in the subways and you'll probably see a big drop in subway crime.

Of course it needs to be setup with detailed background checks as a requirment and firm rules that do not favor a new hire because they were a police officer somewhere else or because they served in the military.

(980 posts)They probably are not putting these cops at high crime areas, just high visibility areas like Times Square.
It's just a dog and pony show afaic. Someone will raise 4th Amendment concerns, and it will be over.
Why not just bring back the Transit Police. It would certainly cost less.
