Marjorie Taylor Greene Threatened With Removal During State of the Union

Marjorie Taylor Greene was threatened with removal from Congress for donning a "Make America Great Again" hat, which she refused to take off despite being urged to do so by the Sergeant at Arms of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Republican hardliner was wearing a red blazer and a MAGA hat on the House floor while trying to get President Joe Biden's attention as he made his way through representatives to deliver his State of the Union speech.
The House of Representatives does not actually have a rigid dress code for its members, though until 2019 it had, for 181 years, implemented an 1837 rule that banned hats on the floor. The lifting of the ban, which included any kind of head coverings, was celebrated by Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat and a Muslim wearing a headscarf.
But, as a general rule, government buildings like Congress shouldn't be used for "the conduct of campaign or political activities," according to House rules. Greene's MAGA hat could easily be considered a prop for Donald Trump's 2024 campaign.

Please, everyone, give US, not just Joe, a Congress who will address this shit and get us moving forward. We're running out of time on the extinction clock and we have to contend with this fucking brick wall of imbecilic obstruction.

(129,737 posts)Obviously since he already had a button ready to display, he was not only going to address the whiny baby head on and shut her down, but then use the moment to once again excoriate the House, that she is a member of, for their hypocrisy and even their insulting of one of their own in the Senate (Lankford) for crafting a solution that passed the Senate, but was being blocked in the House strictly to score political points. I.e., he called out their refusal to do any work to solve a problem.

BumRushDaShow
(129,737 posts)it has been more a "dress code" thing. The baseball cap emblazoned with "45" on the side, is verboten.
I.e., until recently, the wearing of hats was not permitted in the chamber and they made an exception for head scarfs (for Ilhan Omar since she is Muslim). Just like in the Senate, they had an "understood but unwritten" dress code, until Fetterman came in with the shorts, and then they codified a specific dress code.
