Biden campaign co-chair says president should've used different word than 'illegal'

Source: Politico

Mitch Landrieu, the national co-chair of Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, said Friday that Biden should have used a different word than “illegal” during his State of the Union address when describing the undocumented immigrant who allegedly murdered a Georgia medical student last month.

Biden’s off-the-cuff remark during the address Thursday caused backlash from several Democrats, including lawmakers who posted “no human being is illegal” in response on social media.

“He probably should’ve used a different word and I think he would know that. But what you should notice about that is not that he made a small mistake,” Landrieu said on CNN Friday morning. “The big thing that he didn’t write, and this is what this president always does, is express empathy to people, he expressed kindness to people. He understands because, as you know, he lost a number of children in his life.”

“Lincoln Riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal,” Biden said, mispronouncing her first name. “To her parents, I say my heart goes out to you.”

Keep the focus on the big picture and stop showing that there is anything less than total unification behind Joe.

We need to stop pandering to their framing and using their targeted words and phrases.

Also, to clarify, are you opposed to what I said, or just opposed to labeling a person as illegal? I guess I'm trying to clarify if you also are opposed the idea of labeling their actions of entering the country illegally. If so, then that is what my question was meant to address. If the issue is just with the illegal label on a person, then disregard the question.

a civil and administrative issue not a criminal justice issue with respect to the fact that they happen to exist within our national borders.

There is no crime involved.

"a person in this country without legal authorization". To me, "undocumented" leaves too much ambiguity: is the person missing documents they are expected to possess, not recorded in the government documents they should be, or both?

He was referring to a very specific horrific murder. By saying what he said, he dampened GOP rhetoric about it. He mentioned that those seeking asylum should have decisions made in months and not years whether they would be sent back/deported and that the bipartisan bill that would have passed, had it not been for Trump playing politics by telling the GOP to turn their backs on the deal they negotiated, such occurrences could be prevented in the future.

I don't know the status of the immigration status of the murderer? Did he have a court date some years out?

Honestly, how is that murder more horrific than murders committed by an Americans?

When he entered he shouldn't have spoke to her This vile woman showed nude photos of his son during a congressional hearing and calls Biden an illegitimate President.

Biden took the bait and got down the mud with this pig. And he got dirty when he slipped up and said, "Illegal."

That's why AOC and other Democrats simply walk away when she ambushes them with verbal bullying.

The only upside was it helped Biden prepare for a possible Trump debate. Trump's barrage of insults will be a hundred times worse.
