Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday called out Alabama Sen. Katie Britt's misleading use of an anecdote on sex trafficking to attack President Joe Biden's record on border security in her response to his State of the Union address.
"I'll leave it to her to explain the falsehoods, but I think it illustrates the bigger issue," Buttigieg told ABC "This Week" anchor George Stephanopoulos. "She's a United States senator and the United States Senate right now could be acting to help secure the southern border." He highlighted a recent bipartisan agreement on immigration changes that didn't pass the chamber as Donald Trump criticized it.
Buttigieg said the proposal included "tough compromises for all sides, something that the basis of both parties might not have loved but that would have made a real positive difference -- only for that to be killed by the chill effect that the former president put on congressional Republicans, telling them not to support anything that would represent a policy win for President Biden."
Thursday night, in delivering the official Republican response to Biden's State of the Union speech, Britt told the story of meeting a woman at the border who recounted her experience of being raped by cartels beginning when she was 12 years old. The victim has chronicled her abuse in the past, saying it happened in Mexico between 2004 and 2008 -- during George W. Bush's presidency. Britt made it appear as though Biden's actions were related to the that victim's experience.

(1,259 posts)They talk about it and how terrible it is, but there seem to be few details. My impression is that it's a problem in other countries more than in the US, but MAGA people talk about it like it's common here. They have a clever way of telling horror stories and making them seem like Joe Biden's fault.

(576 posts)There are, unfortunately, many examples of human trafficking in the form of forced labor in the US.
The Great Escape: A True Story of Forced Labor and Immigrant Dreams in America Hardcover January 24, 2023
The above book tells the story of over 200 Indian skilled welders who were tricked into paying $20K each to come to the US to repair oil rigs after Katrina. The oil companies did not want to pay US/union workers. They promised the Indian men would be housed in apartments and that there was a path to earn a green card. The US companies promised that if the men stayed in the US for a certain period of time, they would be able to bring their families here. The men were placed basically in barracks and not allowed to leave. When men would escape, the company owners would actually contact ICE to round them up and bring them back!

It's just part of their attempt to paint Dems as "groomers" and all that nonsense. These people couldn't give a whit about actual sex trafficking unless it was to Matt Gaetz's house.

(399 posts)Exhibit 1: Trump hung out with trafficker Epstein, so he is familiar and associated with that activity ("many of them on the younger side"] Exhibit 2: Trump considered a women as 'trafficked', that is, available for assault and he did assault a woman, as proven in court. Exhibit 3: The Abcess Hollywood tape shows that Trump considers all women to be 'trafficked', that is, to be abused and obscenely grabbed without their consent, by him. Exhibit 4: His use of his status and wealth serve as the 'payment ' associated with trafficking. Conclusion: Trump is a trafficker.

(557 posts)...the white, Christian nationalist lady lied to our faces. For too many Christians, it has become a faith without works. Jesus was all about helping the poor, but now many "Christians" subscribe to a Prosperity Theology. This is a belief that financial blessings are the will of God and faith will increase one's material wealth. You don't actually have to do what Jesus said to do, you just have to believe. So, now they're lying to Christ, too.
