Trump says a TikTok ban would empower Meta, slams Facebook as 'enemy of the people'
Source: CNBC
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday raised concerns about efforts to ban Chinese-owned social media app TikTok in the U.S., saying it would only serve to empower Meta
s Facebook platform.
Without TikTok, you can make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people, Trump, who was formerly U.S. president between 2017 and 2021, said in an interview Monday on CNBCs Squawk Box.
Acknowledging his concerns around national security and data privacy over TikTok, Trump said, theres a lot of good and theres a lot of bad with the platform.
There are a lot of people on TikTok that love it. There are a lot of young kids on TikTok who will go crazy without it, Trump said.

I'd mention that a lot of kids seem to go crazy with TikTok. Plus it's an incredible waste of time.

(25,505 posts)Facebook and other social media and their lackluster (and, often, nonexistent) record on combating misinformation contributed to the normalization of Trump, fake news, and a post-truth society.
Traditional media often gets the blame, but social media supercharged it.
And there's the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which assisted Trump and Cruz:

That said, it cracks me up that articles have to identify who Donald Trump is - "Presumptive Republican presidential nominee" or "formerly U.S. president between 2017 and 2021". Is there anyone on the planet who doesn't know who Trump is? That's a lot of unnecessary filler words.

(9,853 posts)Mr. Trump tried to ban TikTok while in office, pushing its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform to a new owner or face being blocked from American app stores. A House committee advanced legislation last week that would similarly force TikTok to cut ties with ByteDance.
