VENICE, Fla. (AP) In a rare occurrence along Florida's Gulf Coast, a large sperm whale that drew national attention after beaching itself on a sandbar died Monday, state wildlife officials said.
The whale was measured at about 44 feet (13 meters) long, roughly the size of a large school bus. It weighs as much as 70,000 pounds (31,700 kilograms), officials said.
Police and wildlife officials began trying Sunday morning to free the male whale just off the beach in Venice, Florida. By that evening, the whale was suffering from labored breathing and died around 3 a.m. Monday, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Today, biologists will collect samples to attempt to determine cause of illness and death and to better understand sperm whale health, and life history, the FWC said in a statement.

(2,852 posts)But the whole Gulf is toxic... filled with residuals of oil spills and the corexit and other chemicals used trying to clean up oil spills. I do wonder how much of that is causing not only this beaching, but the deaths of other marine creatures along the entire Gulf coast. The enormous warming of the ocean couldn't have had good effects, either. I so wanted to retire around the Galveston area. But that was before the chemical and oil companies did their thing. Not satisfied with only giving the human population higher rates of cancer and asthma, they've now taken on the marine creatures and the Mother, Herself. I ended up retiring in a totally landlocked state. But I still weep for the Gulf coast, and the creatures I helped at one time... trying to rid their feathers of the oil. It left a huge, lasting impression on me.
