CNN Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will have surgery under full anesthesia for a hernia, his office said in a statement.
Netanyahu, 74, was diagnosed with a hernia during a routine examination on Saturday and is scheduled to undergo the surgery at the end of business on Sunday, the statement read.
The surgery means Israels leader will be temporarily out of action with the nation at war with Hamas in Gaza following the October 7 attacks.
Israels deputy prime minister and justice minister, Yariv Levin, will step in for Netanyahu while he is incapacitated.

(102,599 posts)I think the thought of being awake for that procedure frightens him more than general anesthesia... I leave you all to your own conclusion.

(102,599 posts)It is an option in many cases (not all), but anesthesiologists often don't offer it unless asked, or the patient has severe risk factors for anesthesia (or prior repeated serious reactions). In many cases they don't offer it because the surgeon objects (which is not that uncommon as there is a "sense" that though epidurals are standard of care for many female abdominal or genital procedures, there is a never-ending "belief" that epidurals or nerve blocks just might not be sufficient for men (although frequently used for vasectomies-- rather than or along with propofol). Sorry if that is dripping with a bit of sarcasm, but I've heard it enough to know (both directly and from eye-rolling anesthesiologists).

Using Local Anesthesia for Inguinal Hernia Repair Reduces Complications in Older Patients
Background
Inguinal hernia repair is the most common general surgery operation in the United States. Nearly 80% of inguinal hernia operations are performed under general anesthesia versus 15%20% using local anesthesia, despite the absence of evidence for superiority of the former. Although patients aged 65 years and older are expected to benefit from avoiding general anesthesia, this presumed benefit has not been adequately studied. We hypothesized that the benefits of local over general anesthesia for inguinal hernia repair would increase with age.

(102,599 posts)in these procedures. That is not to say there may not be issues with your specific condition that could not cause a surgeon, anesthesiologist or both to argue against and to recommend general anesthesia, but armed with this published well-conducted summary article, it gives you the ability to discuss it with them.

Netanyahu will be having planned surgery under top-level hospital conditions. A slipup could happen, but it's highly unlikely.

(2,978 posts)The hernia and surgery present an opportunity for Netanyahu to step down under the guise of "medical retirement due to an emergent medical condition". The situation in Gaza has made him such a pariah that he needs a face-saving way out of leadership, and this is it.
Heck, this may not even be a real hernia. The whole thing could be staged.
If it's real, the surgery should take place in a hospital in Gaza.
