1 in 5 Americans think violence may solve U.S. divisions, poll finds
Source: PBS
Most Americans, no matter their political affiliation, do not believe that violence is a solution to domestic political divisions, according to this latest poll. But Republicans were more likely than Democrats or independents and slightly more likely than the population overall to say force may be needed to course-correct.
During recent reelection campaign rallies, presumptive Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump has questioned the humanity of immigrants, referred to a much debated blood bath for the country if he does not get reelected and describes people who have been convicted for Jan. 6 criminal offenses as hostages.
His speeches often attempt to convince people the country is going downhill, that things are awful and only he can fix them, said Barbara McQuade, a law professor at the University of Michigan and author of Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America.

(4,522 posts)Also, every time I see this mentioned most are thinking the pork chop squad against US troops. That is NEVER going to happen. They know they can't win like that and they don't have the balls. What they are going to do is make the US look like the 70s, for those of you who have forgotten, car bombs, house bombs, arson, kidnappings, hijackings. Now let's add in some newer scenarios - you don't need a gun or to even leave your home to hack a water supply, the 911 system or grid.
If this still doesn't convince you, the Afgans beat us AND Russia with a handful of 50 year old rifles and a pile of rocks.
To write this crowd off is a huge mistake.

(14,022 posts)Yes, they can and will commit isolated terror attacks but as long as Trump doesnt get into office it wont be anything near a destabilizing force for the country. Not even close to anything like Russia and Afghanistan.

Long after Trump is gone, we'll still have to deal with right-wing extremist violence.

(25,481 posts)It polls much more than violence. Huge difference between Independents, Republicans and Democrats on immigration and other issues. 51% of Rep, 55% of Ind want all undocumened immigrants deported, versus 23% of Dems.
A few other issues too.

(5,022 posts)Do Americans have to resort to violence to get the country back on track?
In terms of the 12% of Democrats who strongly agree it may not be so much "we're going to kill you to get our way" as "they are going to get their way if they don't get killed."
Also, it doesn't specify who is perpetrating the violence. Americans resorting to violence for Republicans may be them using their guns to start a revolution whereas for Democrats is may be more like state violence (authorizing the National Guard to use violence against insurrectionists, for example).
For a survey research perspective, it actually is a relatively poorly worded question and the headline is not an accurate reflection of the results they report.
