'We are doubling down': Attorney General Garland announces new initiatives to combat violent crime

Source: ABC News

Attorney General Merrick Garland visited Chicago Wednesday to highlight decreases in violent crime around the country, and announced a surge of investments and resources that he said will be aimed at "doubling down" on recent progress by law enforcement and their local partners.

"These declines are not just abstract statistics," Garland said. "As you know so well, they represent people -- people who are still here to see their children grow up, to work toward fulfilling their dreams, and to contribute to their communities."

Garland's comments come in an election year when violent crime is a major campaign issue, and one that Biden's opponent, former President Donald Trump has attacked him on. While violent crime is dramatically falling, Trump and other Republicans have criticized the president over his handling of crime -- often mentioning several high-profile crimes that are alleged to have been committed by immigrants who crossed the southern border illegally.

In remarks at a conference for federal grantees, Garland pointed to statistics showing that last year, the U.S. saw the largest one-year decline in homicides in half a century, including a 13% decrease last year in Chicago.

Exclusive: Trump Media saved in 2022 by Russian-American under criminal investigation

Trump’s social media company went public relying partly on loans from trust managed by person of interest to prosecutors

Donald Trump’s social media company Trump Media managed to go public last week only after it had been kept afloat in 2022 by emergency loans provided in part by a Russian-American businessman under scrutiny in a federal insider-trading and money-laundering investigation.

[...]

The situation led Trump Media to take emergency loans, including from an entity called ES Family Trust, which opened an account with Paxum Bank, a small bank registered on the Caribbean island of Dominica that is best known for providing financial services to the porn industry.

Through leaked documents, the Guardian has learned that ES Family Trust operated like a shell company for a Russian-American businessman named Anton Postolnikov, who co-owns Paxum Bank and has been a subject of a years-long joint federal criminal investigation by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) into the Trump Media merger.

8. Jena Griswold, Colorado Secretary of State

was on Nicolle Wallace yesterday. Nicolle read 3 or 4 vile threats that were sent to Jena. Jena replied that there were worse ones.

Magats are blaming Jena for the lawsuit that tried to keep Trump off the ballot, she had nothing to do with it. Jena made the statement that only 20 people have been arrested who made threats to election workers. She said 38% of election workers have quit in Colorado.

I'm guessing the same thing is happening across the country. We were told that threats to public officials would be addressed once Kristen Clarke was confirmed.

I can see this as part of an overall strategy, & it's a good one. Attack the radical right & shoot down every one of their BS lying talking points.

Sorry if I offend the Garland haters here... I often wonder what the Venn diagram of "Garland haters" & "Pelosi enablers" would look like. Seems to me it would be very close to a single circle.
