NEW YORK (AP) The judge in Donald Trumps hush money criminal case on Friday turned down the former presidents request to postpone his trial because of publicity about the case.
Its the latest in a string of delay denials that Trump has gotten from various courts this week as he fights to stave off the trials start Monday with jury selection.
Among other things, Trumps lawyers had argued that the jury pool was deluged with what the defense saw as exceptionally prejudicial news coverage of the case. The defense maintained that was a reason to hold off the case indefinitely.
Judge Juan M. Merchan said that idea was not tenable. Trump appears to take the position that his situation and this case are unique and that the pre-trial publicity will never subside. However, this view does not align with reality, the judge wrote.

(2,371 posts)But Cantaloupe Caligula is the one GENERATING most of the publicity by constantly bitching, moaning, whining, and complaining
and attacking the judge, and prosecutors and then blaming Biden and his dogs, their fleas, etc., etc., ad nauseam.

(10,908 posts)He should want to prove his innocence as soon as possible, so that the election will reward him accordingly.
Unless he really knows he's a POS who should be imprisoned for the rest of his miserable life.

(1,540 posts)Trump is responsible for 99.44% of the pre-trial publicity.
If Trump would had simply STFD and STFU there would be no pre-trial publicity.

(18,637 posts)There's always the weekend when some judge somewhere steps in with some crazy view that will have to be decided before the trial can start.
If it starts on Monday, I expect a mistrial to be declared sometime early in the procedures.
A court can declare a mistrial at any time during a trial if there is misconduct by the defendant, their attorney, or others acting on their behalf.
The lawyers or Trump may be chastised but Trump wants a delay more than anything else so this would be a small thing to pay if it delays the trial until after the election.

The source of all that exceptionally prejudicial news" has been HIM, and quite deliberately so -- this is like Hugh Hefner complaining about pimps!

...In this County alone, Defendant has had two civil trials, one in State Court and the other in Federal Cout. In those two matters, he is as personally responsible for generating much, if not most, of the surrounding publicity with his public statements, which were often made just a few steps outside the courtroom where the proceedings were being conducted, and with his unrelenting media posts attacking those he perceived to be responsible for his plight.
The situation Defendant finds himself in now is not new to him and at least in part, of his own doing. As the People aptly note, "Courts have repeatedly rejected any relief when, as here, the 'defendant willingly and voluntarily participated in the pretrial publicity by giving a statement to the media concerning the incident which formed the basis for the charge."

(50,562 posts)What could be entertaining is to call the five big networks - ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and Fox - asking them to give a rough count of the times Trump and his minions have been on their shows talking about this case.

(5,849 posts)... the rantings of an orange diaper-filled ranting toddler on meth, the public would hear about all the details of the 34 felony counts, the fact that each count carries a maximum sentence of four years, and what a slam-dunk case this actually is, with receipts, eyewitness statements, and tangible proof.
That would be publicity. But no. The media is filled with the rantings of an orange diaper-filled toddler on meth.
And if he was innocent, he'd want to get this over with so he can play the poor persecuted victim. Instead, he knows there's a very, very high probability that he will be convicted and sentenced to prison time.
How many times has he tried to stop this trial? Is this nine now?
