Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) called a joint press conference on election integrity from former President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) absurd Friday, given the indictments Trump faces over 2020 election interference.
I mean, its too rich that Donald Trump and Mike Johnson are talking to us about election integrity. Thats like having to listen to a lecture by Bonnie and Clyde on bank security. I mean, its absurd considering what they did in the 2020 election to try and overturn it, Swalwell said during an appearance on CNNs Anderson Cooper 360.
In the press conference at the former presidents Mar-a-Lago resort earlier Friday, Johnson touted legislation that would prevent noncitizens from voting illegally. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 already prohibits foreign nationals from voting in any federal election. A few jurisdictions allow noncitizens to vote in local elections such as municipal and school board elections, though.
Theyre going after something that is already illegal, and by the way, its not a thing, Swalwell told Cooper, referring to the legislation mentioned at the press conference.

I believe they are setting up the undocumented immigrant voting argument, among other issues, for their cries of stolen election.

(116 posts)...we better not assume it won't work because there are many Americans who aren't necessarily racist, but are bigots and afraid of "the other". Many are also sure, sure I tell you - that "the other" wants their couch and refrigerator.
Dems must be ready to counter Deadbeat Donald's attack on voting accuracy with media as well as the law with lawyers. Dems MUST find a way to get headlines and counter the Republicon's lies.

(14,321 posts)If they succeed in making everyone provide proof of citizenship to register to vote, that would depress turnout. Not everyone has the required documentation, and those without it tend to be poorer and Democratic, much like voter ID.
It's ass backwards because the government already knows who its citizens are. Shifting the burden of proof to the individual might play well on Fox, but most people will be pissed off at the hassle, especially if they aren't grandfathered in.
This would likely only affect new voter registrations, but could still make a significant difference. However, I do not think they will succeed; the Senate would stop it. But they still benefit from the accusation of illegal immigrants voting and casting doubt on any election they lose. I think that's their only realistic goal here, until and unless they win. After that, look out.
