Biden campaign cashes in on Trump's historic trial day as they share reports of him sleeping in court

Source: UK Independent

President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign appears to be capitalising on his 2024 rival Donald Trump’s new nickname — “Sleepy Don” — after the former president allegedly was spotted falling asleep in the criminal courtroom.

Mr Trump gained the nickname “Sleepy Don” after it was reported that the former president appeared to be nodding off as jury selection was underway in the so-called hush money trial — the first-ever criminal trial against a sitting or former US president. The Biden team seemed to welcome this new nickname with open arms after the Republican ex-president repeatedly branded the president as “Sleepy Joe” on the campaign trail.

The president’s team retweeted a video of New York Times journalist Maggie Haberman telling CNN about seeing Mr Trump allegedly dozing off during jury selection. “His head would fall down. He didn’t pay attention to a note his lawyer passed him. His jaw kept falling on his chest and his mouth kept going slack,” the team wrote.

The Biden-Harris campaign also posted a meme making fun of Mr Trump’s fiery late-night Truth Social posts as he is allegedly snoozing on this historic day.

5. A couple days ago, my sisters had texted me links to both "GenZ Slang..." and "Gen Alpha Slang..." websites

That is who they are directing that at (although the oldest "Gen Alpha" still has about 4 years until they can vote - which would be the 2028 election).

Think. Again.

6. Okay, I'm very glad they're appealing to the younger vote...

...and the campaign's original text message is much more subtle than when the words are printed out because it is after all a meme they used.

10. Those generations

(something sort of started by the youngest Millennials) tend to "express themselves" through static memes, although more recently through TikTok shorts. My youngest nieces and nephews send me short TikTok videos (that I usually can't open since I don't have an account) to use as an "analogy" to comment on some situation.

Think. Again.

7. I guess the campaign is speaking to the youth vote with that particular text...

...and I'm glad they're reaching out to the younger voters using messaging that they are comfortable with.

In any case, Go Joe!!! 🌊 !!!

9. Don't know who the character (?) is, but I'm surprised that Trump is being portrayed as black.

Especially that he is being portrayed as black in a way that seems to pick up on the theme of black men as criminal defendants.

Maybe people recognizes the person and maybe there is a rational reason for using a black man sleeping in court. But not everyone is in the know - and it feels off, in a negative way, to me.

11. Those youngest generations don't "see race" in the same way when using memes as their analogous "commentary"

They are very "visual" and as long as it expresses their sentiment at the moment, it is fair game.

but they are NOT "Millennials or GenZs". They seem fuddy duddy GenX and probably don't "get it" either.

14. Not a generational thing.

Using two race-connected stereotypes (sleepy/lazy and criminal) as an insult is not cool. Anti-racism work is not limited to fuddy-duddys. Most of the people I know engaged in it are in their 20s and 30s.

that younger generation is more "woke" (their older Millennial siblings coined the slang use of the term) than the older generations.

They are able to separate out a "meme" from "reality" despite using "memes" to attempt to describe their moods.

WE both know how that "appears" based on the use in our past lives, but they don't have that past experience and have seen huge strides in depictions and acceptance of diversity (despite the continual setbacks) that we never saw at their age.
