Google Fires 28 Employees for Protesting Company's Cloud Deal With Israel

Source: Wall Street Journal (gift link)

Alphabet's Google said it fired 28 employees who protested this week against the tech giant’s cloud-computing contract with the Israeli government.

In a companywide email, Vice President for Global Security Chris Rackow said Google dismissed the employees after an investigation found they were involved in the protests at the company’s offices in New York and Sunnyvale, Calif.

The protests were “unacceptable, extremely disruptive and made co-workers feel threatened,” Rackow wrote in the email.

“The overwhelming majority of our employees do the right thing,” Rackow wrote. “If you’re one of the few who are tempted to think we’re going to overlook conduct that violates our policies, think again.”

I don't find this call hard to make at all.

You think it's okay for some Starbucks barista to disrupt selling coffee by holding a "I hate Brazil" protest at work?

Sadly I only managed 4 hours of sleep 😴
Ya, a 10 hour long protest is a no no.

Edit: BTW have I mentioned that growing older sucks and that I miss the days of glue and glitter?

I get less respect than Rodney Dangerfield.

By the way what are glue and glitter? I couldn‘t find a menu anywhere that offered them…..

In other words when it seemed like everything took forever to happen like waiting for Christmas and where generally the world didn't seem as harsh.

It‘s true that bad things these days seem to happen in rapid-fire succession, and waiting for good things is like waiting for Godot.

You lot are fired because your behavior was disruptive, unsettling to the other workers and just unacceptable.

OR

Any criticism of Israel will be put down with maximum prejudice!

Maybe the second but dressed up as the first option.

Police officers arrested nine Google employees Tuesday following sit-in protests that lasted 10 hours, according to No Tech for Apartheid. Protesters in Sunnyvale occupied an office used by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.

At both sites, protesters said they planned to occupy Google office spaces until they were either arrested or Google canceled its contract with Israel.

First, this wasn’t just “any criticism“, they took over CEOs office looking to get arrested. But if you want to blame Israel, go ahead. Are you justifying taking over the CEO’s office of any business that does business with any state or country they have done business with that has done things some don’t agree with as an OK action as a rule? Or just if it’s not Israel?

“A small number of employee protesters entered and disrupted a few of our locations. Physically impeding other employees’ work and preventing them from accessing our facilities is a clear violation of our policies, and completely unacceptable behavior. After refusing multiple requests to leave the premises, law enforcement was engaged to remove them to ensure office safety,” the spokesperson added.

But of course tor some.. it's All Israel's fault.. Maybe if they hadn't FA and Stopped other employees from Doing their Jobs.. they wouldn't be FO.

Same thing would have happened in any other American company.

It's got nothing to do with "free speech" or any other constitutional freedom. They were employed and serving at their employer's pleasure, which they violated.

You want to protest company policy? Fine - go do it somewhere else on your own time.

I’m probably going to make it really disgusting and disturbing for you because fuck you I have work to do.

They got the FO to their FA. Maybe they can find a company who will deal with them.

Thankfully, my employer sticks to its competencies, focuses on trying to keep the stock price up, and doesn't feel compelled to issue statements on the political flavor of the day.

The outfit I work for doesn‘t have a „stock price“ and has two co-CEOs, one a Republican and one a Democrat. But the prevailing attitude is generally the same. Years ago, one mid-to-high level employee joined the God Squad, and suddenly felt he needed to dedicate half of his workday converting other employees to his version of Chistianity.

He was fired, although in recognition of many years with us, and because he had a family, they kept him on the books for half a year until he found another job, so he wouldn‘t lose his health insurance.
