New RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by JudyM (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: UC Riverside

Scientists at UC Riverside have demonstrated a new, RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus and can be used safely even by babies or the immunocompromised.

Every year, researchers try to predict the four influenza strains that are most likely to be prevalent during the upcoming flu season. And every year, people line up to get their updated vaccine, hoping the researchers formulated the shot correctly.

The same is true of COVID vaccines, which have been reformulated to target sub-variants of the most prevalent strains circulating in the U.S.

This new strategy would eliminate the need to create all these different shots, because it targets a part of the viral genome that is common to all strains of a virus. The vaccine, how it works, and a demonstration of its efficacy in mice is described in a paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They can still infect some just by keeping the virus active in the population, of course.

Imagine if you don’t need a new flu shot every year; imagine if you don’t have to worry if they picked the right strains for this year’s flu shot. It could be a big deal.

mRNA was already in development. That's why they were able to fast track it during the pandemic.

Nice to see more postitive developments.

You should see my aura during solar flare activity, it's awesome.

But, having gotten every Covid shot and booster, I still got the covid this winter. Thanks to UV light, bleach, and novichok, I'm good as new.

So they've essentially cured the common cold. No one could before because there's hundreds of cold variants. But this should target all of them. All the colds, all the flu's, all the covids, rsv. Holy cow. This is big.
