US weighs sending additional military advisers to Ukraine as Russia gains momentum

The U.S. is considering sending additional military advisers to the embassy in Kyiv, the latest show of American commitment to Ukraine as Russia appears to be gaining momentum in the two-year conflict.
The advisers would not be in a combat role, but rather would advise and support the Ukrainian government and military, according to Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.
Throughout this conflict, the DOD has reviewed and adjusted our presence in-country, as security conditions have evolved. Currently, we are considering sending several additional advisers to augment the Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) at the Embassy, Ryder said in a statement to POLITICO, noting that personnel are subject to the same travel restrictions as all embassy employees.
The ODC performs a variety of advisory and support missions (non-combat), and while it is staffed exclusively by DOD personnel, it is embedded within the U.S. Embassy, under Chief of Mission authority like the rest of the Embassy, Ryder added. Ryder declined to discuss specific numbers of personnel for operational security and force protection reasons.

(33,402 posts)Putin wants territory - Novorussia & Crimea. Ukraine would have to cede everything Russia's captured to this point.

(32,798 posts)And an even more insatiable lust for more of Ukraine. Hes already said he plans to move the capital of Russia to Kyiv tell ya anything?
maxsolomon
(33,402 posts)A rump Ukraine's admission into NATO would largely end that threat. That could be a condition of ceding territory.
When did Putin say he wanted to relocate the capital from Moscow to Kyiv?

Money is going to be a big issue for Russia and soon.

But thanks for the Putin talking points.

(17,390 posts)Keep in mind that Putin is not only targeting Republicans with their propaganda. It is just that Republicans have been more than willing to embrace such propaganda in return for Russian Sock Puppet support.
Remember when Tulsi Gabbard started gaining social media momentum as a progressive even though she had some very unprogressive views. The biggest thing she had in her favor was that she was very pro-Putin. Likewise, you had Glenn Greenwald who went from being supposed progressive to endorsing Trump and former MSNBC commentator Ed Schultz becoming a anchor on Russian propaganda station Russia Today.

(12,449 posts)Vietnam was a civil war, one which we should have stayed out of, Ukraine is not a civil war, it's a war of aggression by Russia and if Putin isn't stopped in Ukraine, then the rest of Europe is in danger of Russian aggression, which would require US troops to intervene.
Equating Vietnam to Ukraine is just ridiculous.

(9 posts)In the runup to Russia's invasion I pondered this and began to worry about the terrible consequences of NATO sending troops to aid Ukraine and prevent Russia swallowing them up. I also worried about the even worse consequences of NOT sending troops. This may come to that time, which is called "The Devil's Alternative". We lost over 58,000 men and women in Vietnam with hundreds of thousands wounded and scarred mentally in a fight for "freedom". If it comes to this, this would be a far more worthy fight for liberty. Is Ukraine's government corruption free? Hell no. But their President has clearly demonstrated that they can achieve that goal by his leadership during this conflict.

(32,798 posts)The main difference, Vietnam was about nation building. Not so in Ukraine.
Vietnam was not a NATO nation.
Ukraine will never give in. all the EU knows its imperative Russia be stopped. Poland, France, Finland and other EU/NATO nations say they will put boots on the ground in Ukraine if they cannot resoundingly defeat Russia on the battlefield. They know putin
they know whats coming if they dont stop it.
We stuck our nose into Vietmans affairs when it didnt belong. Ukraine is not currently a NATO nation, but it will be. we are coming to the defense of our fellow NATO allies right now because if we dont, there will be boots on the ground. Russia knows they do not stand a chance in a war against the US and NATO.
