The Pentagon could rush vital air defense weapons and artillery shells to Ukraine within days if the military aid bill clears the Senate as expected and receives President Joe Biden's signature, said the Department of Defense.
The House of Representatives voted in favor of the bill on Saturday. The bill is widely expected to pass the Senate in the coming days. It generally mirrors a $95.3 billion national security bill passed by the upper chamber in February. President Biden has pledged to sign it into law.
With the Senate approval, officials told The Washington Post that preparations for the assistance package were well underway ahead of the anticipated legislative approvals. Divisions within the Republican Party, exacerbated by opposition from far-right factions, have led to delays in advancing the funding bill. Indeed, a majority of Republicans voted against the bill, which passed by a 311-112 margin.
The aid allocation earmarks about $60 billion for Ukraine, with additional funds designated for allies, including Israel and key partners in Asia. According to the Post's insider sources, The Department of Defense has expedited the assembly of this aid package in response to mounting concerns over Ukraine's ability to resist Russian advances.

(12,449 posts)be loaded onto MAC aircraft as soon as Pres. Biden signs it into law, hell, they'll probably start loading it before it's even signed and the birds will be in the air before the ink is even dry.

(12,449 posts)Putin must be fuming, not only did his mouthpieces in the House fail him, but now he faces the fact that his dream of a delay in delivering that aid is shattered also.

(19,274 posts)And the US doesn't have the capacity to rapidly crank out mass quantities of said ammunition anymore.
For all the money we've invested in the military industrial complex, we don't have the surge capacity like we once did, and it will be problematic in the coming months.

(12,449 posts)interested in unless it's on his terms, something you seem to be cheering for.
So you ascribe to the Chamberlain theory, you know, Peace For Our Time?
Gee, how well did that work out for the world?
So, what's your solution for peace when one side has zero interest in peace?
Ukraine surrender under Putin's terms?
Or should we just stop supporting Ukraine with the necessary aid they need, something you are in favor of, and let Ukraine fall?
BTW, I have never cheered for war in my life time, I have always preferred the peaceful way out, but when there are tyrants in the world, IE, Putin, Xi, Hitler, etc., bent on conquest of other nations, then that is the time to stand up to them. even if it means military action.
Please don't put your words in my mouth, I've no idea where they've been.
I am thankful you weren't in charge during WWII, I hate to think what language I'd be speaking right now.

(23,369 posts)... can these bills be held up if one senator objects?
I hoped these bills would be passed and then signed by the prez before the Trump trial opened this morning. We need to deliver this ammunition to Russian soldiers asap.
Edit to add: I know, we deliver to Ukranian soldiers, then THEY deliver to Russian soldiers.

(129,562 posts)But they would all need to go through the usual procedural steps of cloture, debate, etc. They might even try for some kind of expedited Rule for debate that limits debate and fast-tracks these. They could even do them as a "unanimous consent" but that would definitely be blocked, forcing the usual procedure.
What will help is that the bills being sent over are mostly the same, policy/amount-wise, of what the Senate had originally passed, but broken up into 4 separate bills and including some $$$ as loans (probably considered even more "palatable" to some of the GOP Senators who already voted for the original version).
