Netanyahu Decries Reported US Plan to Sanction Army Unit

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned a reported US plan to sanction an ultra-Orthodox army battalion over human rights abuses in the West Bank, a move which could fuel tensions over Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. “At a time when our soldiers are fighting terrorist monsters, the intention to sanction a unit in the IDF is the height of absurdity and a moral low,” Netanyahu wrote on X, referring to the Israel Defense Forces.

The US is expected within days to announce the punitive measure, which would be the first time the US sanctions an Israeli army unit, Axios reported on Saturday, citing three people with knowledge of the matter in the US that it didn’t identify. The US Embassy in Israel declined to comment.

Blacklisting the Netzah Yehuda Battalion would prohibit it from receiving US military equipment or training. It’s been accused of mistreating Palestinians, including in an incident in January 2022 when an elderly US-Palestinian man, Omar Assad, was found dead after his detention by members of the unit in the West Bank.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday said he will reveal “in the days ahead” his determinations on whether specific Israeli military or police units are liable to be sanctioned under the so-called Leahy Law, which bars military assistance to other countries’ security forces that violate human rights.

8. Bibi is going to go away just as fast

as Trump is going to go away. Brothers from different mothers. They're exactly alike. I detest what happened in October, but Bibi isn't doing himself, Israel as a whole, or Israeli citizens any favors at this point. Plus, I'm truly beginning to believe his aim is aligned with Trumps and Putin's... to cause WWIII to rise within the Middle East. As an Israeli, I would expect him to have a more clarified understanding and empathy of Palestinian atrocities. Yes, I agree, it's hard as hell when Hammas is embedded within the citizenship. But I don't believe one can condemn every single Palestinian as a Hammas agent, regardless of sex or age. Instead of trying to work with world leaders to come up with a workable idea, he's bombing the hell out of everyone and anyone. This, at a time when Anti-Semitism is raging because of white Nationalists infiltrating governments and the countryside world-wide.

Most of us in our 70's and older remember when we first thought the way Israel was formed was going to be trouble for the rest of the future. But everyone, I guess, was exhausted from WWII and Hitler. The atrocities against the Jewish people too immense. Something had to be done "immediately." But in helping one group of people, the world condemned another group of indigenous people. And then the "tit for tat"... which is still going on to this day, only in numbers beyond what hearts can handle.

I wish Bibi was more like Biden than Trump. But he is who he is; and I've read so much about his past, his present, what he's tried to do to cover his butt... just like Trump tries to cover his. And both, IME, are puppets for Putin.

The people doing the dying... Israeli and Palestinian alike, are not the ones who need to die, IMO. But ordinary people have always been pawns and cannon fodder for their "leaders." Some things, I guess, will never change until we ratchet down the amount of testosterone at the top of the ladders of the world. YMMV, of course. My heart and soul just hurts too much.

These ultra-orthodox are unreconstructed from the days of the Bible, when they loved genocide and rape.

wants to give them. They'll just claim they came from somewhere else. We will see another escalation by Netanyahu most likely as his "act of defiance". A nice thank you for us sending more billions in aid.

6. I have no sympathy for the Israeli government and especially Netanyahu

It's one thing if you are fighting Hamas, I don't think anyone is questioning that. It's another when you are using an army to abuse or kill Palestinians just for the heck of it. If the idea is you want Palestinians to see that Hamas is not the answer, then doing that is not going to work. Netanyahu is a big reason for why it is a mess.

10. Don't get in Bibi's way!

A clean sweep, a scorched earth policy is his agenda.

Bulldoze the place, kill or drive out the occupants, whitewash the history books.

The US taps Bibi on the shoulder, and says politely - should you be doing this?

Bibi turns around and says - What? Know your place America! Don't complain, just keep the weapons coming!
