Blinken to warn China over its support for Russia's military during this week's visit

Source: NBC News

Secretary of State Antony Blinken will warn China about its support for Russia’s military during his visit to the country this week, according to a senior State Department official.

Blinken is expected to convey Washington’s “deep concerns” over China’s aid for Russia’s defense industrial base, during his three-day visit starting Wednesday.

“We’re prepared to take steps when we believe necessary against firms that ... severely undermine security in both Ukraine and Europe,” the official told reporters ahead of Blinken’s trip. “And I think we’ve demonstrated our willingness to do so regarding firms from a number of countries, not just China,” he added. “At any rate, again, I think this will be a key issue of discussion while we’re in Beijing.”

U.S. allies in Europe are concerned about the implications of Beijing’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine and “what it means for European security in particular, and then, of course, it will be up to China to determine its next steps,” the official noted.

Our two economies are tied to closely together. It would blowback against the U.S. economy. Besides sanctions have not worked against Russia. How could they work against an economy far, far bigger than Russia?

They are taking a huge financial hit.

And we can impose sanctions on China too.

There are videos here on DU by economists who spell all of this out very clearly. I watch them every day.

It took a while for the sanctions to work through the supply chain.
Europe stopped buying oil from Russia months ago.

Production is down and once the oil refineries slow down production it is hard to gear them back up.

Now Ukraine is hitting oil refineries as well with their drones.

Russia is hurting financially. Once you do a deep weed dive in their numbers.

China is helping Russia with cash, supplies and weapons.
Once they get sanctions that will dry up too.

NYT is hardly a reliable source of information now.
Listen to the experts on the Russian and Chinese economy.

The fact that you dismiss the NYT tells me where you are coming from. And I don't want to be from that place.

Neither India or China has stopped buying Russian oil.

US has not asked India to cut Russian oil purchases, American official says

NEW DELHI, April 4 (Reuters) - The United States has not asked India to cut Russian oil imports as the goal of sanctions and the G7-imposed $60 per barrel price cap is to have stable global oil supplies while hitting Moscow's revenue, an American treasury official said on Thursday.

India has emerged as one of the top buyers of Russian sea-borne oil since Western nations imposed sanctions and halted purchases in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

"It is important to us to keep the oil supply on the market. But what we want to do is limit Putin's profit from it," Eric Van Nostrand, who is performing the duties of U.S. Treasury assistant secretary for economic policy, said in New Delhi, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Van Nostrand said that buyers can purchase Russian oil at deeper discounts outside of the price cap mechanism, if they do not use Western services like insurance and broking, thus limiting Moscow's sales avenues.

Stick to information provided by knowledgable economists.

Not politicians, not local media, not unreliable news outlets.

Many of us stopped reading the NYT.

Also ad hominem attacks are a sign of a weak argument.

Sticking to data is a stronger one.
