U.S. House speaker confronts anti-war protesters at Columbia University

Source: Nebraska Examiner

By: Jennifer Shutt - April 24, 2024 6:39 pm

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson decried antisemitism and raised the possibility of calling in the National Guard to disperse student protesters during a trip to Columbia University in New York City on Wednesday.

Students on that campus, as well as others throughout the country in recent days, have hosted large anti-war rallies calling on the Israeli government to implement a permanent ceasefire in its conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, and a handful of other House GOP lawmakers gave a press conference after meeting with university President Minouche Shafik, calling on her to resign.

“We just can’t allow this kind of hatred and antisemitism to flourish on our campuses,” Johnson said. “And it must be stopped in its tracks.”

But a peaceful camp of protestors needs the national guard?

Johnson is such a tool.

15. No, per the OP the article, Johnson called for the U.S. National Guard.

“There is executive authority that would be appropriate,” Johnson said. “If this is not contained quickly, and if these threats and intimidation are not stopped, there is an appropriate time for the National Guard. We have to bring order to these campuses. We cannot allow this to happen around the country.”

Echoes of 1970s

Johnson calling for the U.S. National Guard to thwart anti-war protests is reminiscent of the 1970s, when officials believed that was the best way to deal with students calling for an end to the Vietnam War.

"Executive authority" is the governor. The Speaker is part of the legislative branch not the executive branch. He is not saying he has the authority to call out the Guard.

It says, "Johnson calling for the National Guard..." not "Johnson calling for the governor to call for the National Guard." Johnson knows who Governor Hochul is. He didn't even mention her name, nor did he say the New York Guard. The New York Army National Guard is a division of the Army National Guard, and although they are under control of the state, they can be federalized (as all Army National Guard units can), and will remain aligned with the federal government over the state government if requirements of the two conflict.

The article said Johnson called for the U. S. National Guard. That is why people are criticising Johnson for saying that. Maybe Johnson meant the governor, or maybe he meant President Biden, but that's not how the article put it.

The article does a good job of reminding readers how well deploying the National Guard worked in Ohio.

As to nitwit saying it was time to remove federal funding from campuses he seems ignorant of the fact we successfully shut down DOD funding at most campuses for years.😬

Ahh it’s great to be 73 and watch history repeat itself. 🤬

"Tin Soldiers and Johnson Coming - We're Finally on Our Own".

Johnson is kind of like Pompeo - a liar, a cheat and a thief who thinks he's a "leader"

Trump Signs Broad Executive Order

President Trump on Thursday delivered on his promise of an executive order that would hold colleges that receive federal research funding accountable for protecting free speech.

However, his bombastic rhetoric in a White House East Room ceremony wasn't matched by the modest language of the order.

"If a college or university does not allow you to speak, we will not give them money. It's that simple," he said Thursday.

Snip

But it’s not clear what kind of teeth the order has beyond new certification requirements for institutions. A senior administration official told reporters on Thursday that federal agencies will enforce it the same way they enforce existing federal grant conditions, which colleges already are required to follow. The official didn’t address details about how the order would be implemented.

He held a "press conference after meeting with the university president". I am willing to bet he didn't even see a protester, let alone "confront" one.

And our fucking media has the fucking nerve to laugh at David Pecker.

They're all fucking peckers!!!!
