Student Protest Leader at Columbia: 'Zionists Don't Deserve to Live'
Source: NY Times
Video of incendiary comments by one of the leaders of the student protest encampment at Columbia University surfaced online Thursday evening, forcing the school to again confront an issue at the core of the conflict rippling across campuses nationwide: the tension between pro-Palestinian activism and antisemitism.
The student, Khymani James, said in the January video that Zionists dont deserve to live and Be grateful that Im not just going out and murdering Zionists.
Mr. James made the comments during and after a disciplinary hearing with Columbia administrators that he recorded and then posted on Instagram.
The hearing, conducted by an associate director of the universitys Center for Student Success and Intervention, was focused on an earlier comment he shared on social media, in which he discussed fighting a Zionist. I dont fight to injure or for there to be a winner or a loser, I fight to kill, he wrote.

Hamas reports thousands dead - damn Israel.
I guess we should believe other terrorists like Xi Jinping when he says the CCP doesn't brutalize the people of Xinjiang, Putin who says Ukraine started the war, and Donald Trump when he says the election was stolen.
Oops, those are people the American left hates. But the American left hates Israel, so they believe EVERYTHING that makes Israel look bad even if comes from sources that are known liars.
Confirmation bias. . .my mind is made up, don't confuse me with other information. Just feed me what confirms my beliefs.
Hamas fighters just attacked the humanitarian aid pier according the the DoD. . .I guess they are liars too. Hamas are the only truth tellers. Oct 7 was an Israeli false flag.
Christ, these professional Israel bashers always use the same tactics, then move goalposts when proven wrong or proven they use Hamas information.
Here's the truth! HAMAS ATTACKED ISRAEL ON OCT 7th, the people of Gaza cheered it in the streets, and Israel finally said enough is enough after 75 years of terrorist attack after one killed 1200 people.
FAFO, Hamas. Like the Japanese FAFO after Pearl Harbor. And the Japanese people cheered the attack on Pearl Harbor too.
But keep up with the confirmation bias and forget that Hamas uses hospitals and schools to house their weapons. But that's Israel's fault too.

Early Friday morning, Mr. James posted a statement on social media addressing his comments. What I said was wrong, he wrote. Every member of our community deserves to feel safe without qualification. He noted that he made these comments in January before he become involved with the protest movement and added that the leaders of the student protests did not condone the comments. I agree with their assessment, he wrote.
Mr. James did not respond to a request for comment.

(51,745 posts)Zionism is simply a movement to recreate a Jewish presence in Israel. The name comes from the word Zion, which is a Hebrew term that refers to Jerusalem. https://www.history.com/topics/middle-east/zionism
In 2022, the population of Palestinian citizens of Israel amounted to around 1.9 million. Zionism obviously does not mean the genocide of Palestinians.

Why does this same all powerful god allow his faithful to be killed?

elias7
(4,029 posts)Neither of us give any such agency to a supreme being. You, because you are a non-believer and me because I dont think about god in this way. I was being somewhat tongue in cheek in my earlier response.
I resonate with Spinozas conception of there literally being only one substance (lets label this god) with infinite attributes and extensions, and so the vast (the universe) and the minute (the lives of humans on one planet) are the unfolding of a process or mystery that we will never comprehend (transcendent of our ever knowing) yet is the explanation of my and your existence (imminent, or within us). I resonate hard with Joseph Campbells description of the perennial philosophy (progenitor to Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist thought) where with the astronomical observation by the ancients that the 7 visible spheres (sun, moon, mars, mercury, Venus, Saturn and Jupiter) move in a mathematically calculable procession through the fixed backdrop of stars. This implies an impersonal cosmic order, no personality or God, but rather an ever unfolding process informed by the energies of the universe that is and will always be a mystery. It is up to us to recognize our oneness with the universe, that we are derived and inseparable from this process, and though it will always be a mystery, we can align with nature, harmonize with the process (as we do follow and live in accordance with such observable cycles such as the rise and fall of the day, the monthlong lunar cycle, the cycle of the seasons and the year, the great eon, etc.).
As the explanation for my existence, yours, Palestinians, Israelis, the New England Patriots, trees, rocks, seas, chemical reactions, the Renaissance, Mars, orbiting moons, spinning galaxies, black holes, worm holes, etc. all derive from the same underlying process that will never be understood by our simplistic minds - this mystery I label as god for lack of a better term, and one which has no agency or anthropomorphized concern for the existence of one speck of dust such as myself in one moment (in the face of eternal time) or place (in the face of infinite space), to name but two dimensions.
So, I believe in god insofar as I use this as a label to describe the phenomenon that I believe I exist and think and feel and I believe you do too; that you and I are a tiny manifestation of THE cosmic mystery that informs the energies of the universe. My wife does yoga and the greeting Satnam, I believe, means the infinite in me acknowledges the infinite in you, that we are material beings whose bodies will come and go, but for a moment in time (an individual life) carries the energy of the universe from which it was derived.
Probably a bit more than you asked for

Thousands of Jewish nationalists, some of them chanting Death to Arabs and other racist slogans, paraded on Thursday through the main Palestinian thoroughfare of Jerusalems Old City, in an annual display that caused new friction between Jews and Palestinians in the tense city.
The marchers, who were overwhelmingly male Orthodox teens and young men, were celebrating Jerusalem Day, which marks Israels capture of the Old City 56 years ago. The Palestinians see the event as a provocation. Two years ago, the parade helped fuel an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.
Throughout the afternoon, dozens of groups hoisting blue and white Israeli flags streamed through Damascus Gate the entry to the areas Muslim Quarter as they made their way across the Old City to the Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray. The area is normally bustling on Thursday afternoons with Palestinians doing their errands ahead of the weekend.

(25,603 posts)Is that OK???
Is it OK for someone in the US to request that an entire group of people die??
He literally says:
"Nazis, white supremacist, Zionists, these are all the same people, the existence of them and all the projects they have built, ie Israel, are all antithetical to peace, so I feel very comfortable calling for these people to die"
He wants people who support Israel to die...(BTW this would be Joe Biden)
Is that OK???
This is hate speech...
Anyone who states they want to wipe out a group of people is engaging in hate speech.
Just because Israel is bombing Gaza to bits and just because many justifiably think it's genocide. It does not justify a retaliation genocide of Israel.
And just because there are bad people in Israel, just wishing for their death is plain old nuts.
Since the beginning of the Gaza war, many Jews in Israel and the Diaspora have been shocked by the virulent anti-Zionism - also known as anti-Israelism - that has exploded online. Extending far beyond the legitimate act of critiquing Israels wartime decisions, many recent blogs and social media posts have been full of hatred toward Zionism, Zionists and Israel. Because of this, some Israeli and Diaspora Jews feel that what were once friendly online social spaces for them have now become unpleasant, threatening, even unsafe. One woman blogged about how, in order to cope with this, she had unfriended many of her Facebook friends.
As a result of this online climate, some people have begun asking themselves questions they hadnt considered before: When did Zionism become a dirty word? What do people mean when they say, Im not anti-Semitic; Im just anti-Zionist? And is this loathing for Israel really just because of the war and the occupation?
These questions are all related. Zionism officially became a dirty - or at least a more complicated - word on November 10, 1975, when the United Nations passed Resolution 3379, equating Zionism with racism. (This was a moment Ill never forget. I was working in a kibbutz henhouse, Id just finished collecting the eggs, and I was so shocked by what I heard on the radio that I dropped all the eggs on the floor.) Resolution 3379 immediately provided enormous credibility to those wishing to delegitimize Israel. Their group has burgeoned ever since and is now prominently represented in the online world.
As for anti-Zionists claiming to be just anti-Zionist, but not anti-Semitic, this is nonsensical to anyone who knows what anti-Zionism is. Anti-Zionists are not just critical of Israels policies or actions (like the war with Gaza or the occupation); they believe that the State of Israel does not have a right to exist. They oppose Israels very existence and survival, yet do not oppose the existence and survival of any other country, including those with human rights records infinitely worse than Israels. As Irwin Cotler points out, the fact that Israel - the only Jewish country in the world - is singled out for this condemnation is inherently anti-Semitic.
