VP Harris seeks to energize Black voters with economic opportunity tour

WASHINGTON, April 29 (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday will launch a multistate tour to tout economic opportunities for Black Americans in an effort to mobilize a critical voting base for Democrats ahead of November’s election.

A major focus of the tour is energizing and engaging Black men, according to a White House official, a key demographic shown by polls to have lost some faith in the Democratic Party. Winning them back will likely determine whether President Joe Biden returns to the White House.

A recent Wall Street Journal poll of seven swing states showed more Black men planned to support Republican Donald Trump than Biden in the rematch of the 2020 election. Harris will participate in a moderated conversation with Earn Your Leisure’s Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings, who have used podcasts to increase financial literacy in Black communities.

The tour, which heads to Detroit next week, will focus on investing in communities, building wealth and ensuring Americans of all colors have economic opportunities, according to the White House. It will also highlight the administration's achievements, including a $158 million federal grant for Atlanta that will reconnect Black communities cut off by major highways with the city's downtown.

But the reality is that black americans are being left out of infrastructure opportunities. 99.9% of the well paid construction and road repair jobs are going to connected white men. Look around you and you will plainly see this is true. It's not just my opinion. Black men are not part of the good ole boy network. On the outside looking in. How do we change that. Maybe by mandating tax payer projects give opportunities to minorities who have been frozen out for many many decades. The wealth gap just keeps getting larger and larger. Lip service wont do anything to change this reality.

I have been shocked and heartened to see here in the Philly metro area, WAY more of the disenfranchised, including blacks and women, FINALLY showing up in the construction arena - whether road crews, and finally even some building construction. But it has been a matter of "breaking" some of those trade unions that have systematically kept black and brown workers, as well as women, out of these trades.

You might also recall the poor Latinos who lost their lives on the Key Bridge in Baltimore, were there as a road crew.

Many cities like here in Philly have ordinances that require that contractors have a certain percent of these groups and have also made available partnerships to actually expose high school students to some of the possibilities and commit to training them. I know that former Prez. Barack Obama's Presidential Library in Chicago is being built by construction contractors who have hired a majority of their workforce from a pool of minorities and women - https://www.obama.org/presidential-center/construction-updates/
