Former Secret Service agent sues New York Post and Daily Mail over Hunter Biden claim

Source: NBC News

April 30, 2024, 1:22 PM EDT

A former Secret Service agent sued two news organizations for defamation Tuesday and accused them of publishing stories based on fabricated text messages that he says falsely linked him to Hunter Biden. Robert Savage, a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Secret Service and the Special Agent in Charge of the agency’s Los Angeles Field Office from 2015-2017, filed the lawsuits in New York against the New York Post and two of its reporters, and the owner and publisher of the Daily Mail.

Savage alleged that the reporters and publications recklessly disregarded information that the text messages, which came from a laptop that purportedly belonged to Hunter Biden, were fabricated. Despite that, they published articles and tweets in 2021 and 2023 that suggested Savage communicated with and met and met with Biden in Los Angeles.

“Rob has not and has never met Hunter Biden, does not know Hunter Biden, has no connection with Hunter Biden, and has never corresponded with Hunter Biden,” Savage’s attorney, Mark Goidell, told NBC News. He added that Savage was "flabbergasted by the false reporting” and that the former agent was filing the lawsuits out for concern for his own well-being and that of his family and business.

“I am fully convinced that the New York Post and the Daily Mail were aware that their factual allegations were false and that the text messages they attributed to Rob were fabricated” Goidell said. He accused the new organizations of publishing the stories to “sensationalize their publications” and increase revenue.

Fox I think it was. So we're coming to a reckoning of all this political angling with false stories.

Victims of those RW smear campaigns should sue the crap out of them and remove as much as possible of the thing they worship most ... money.

...in our system.

Although I agree with you many in the country are getting fed up with bullsh*t "news" - we seem to have no recourse except to sue liars.

If I have $250 million and I decide I don't like you, so I decide to repeatedly publicy announce you're a pedophile, all you can do is sue me. You better have money because I can bury you in procedural delays, while continuing to attack you. So what I get fined by the judge? He or she must jail me to stop me and I can bribe them, or their representative to curry favors.

We have no other mechanism to stop slander. With digital now how are you going to stop them without severe penalties that the justice department or state law enforcement can enforce before it's too late?

The system is weak, and rigged. Look at Fox, they lost $787 million judgement and they never stopped lying.

Your point about a reckoning is hopeful to me, because that's what it's going to take where the people become repulsed and refuse to participate, and or shut Fox and "friends" down ourselves. A tall order to say the least.

Should we eliminate the First Amendment? Let the Government decide what "truth" is?

One tiny little policy change in corporate governance would do it.

Wall Street was and should still be the 'tail.' However, the tail has come to 'wag the dog.'

This is due to the legal doctrine of shareholder primacy (and it IS a legal doctrine established in 1919 by the Michigan Supreme Court), which holds shareholder profits above workers, consumers and the environment.

The NY Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch's Fox Corporation, which is publicly traded on NASDAQ, and the Daily Mail is owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), which trades on the London Stock Exchange.

What this means is that the ONLY fiduciary responsibility the CEOs of these publicly traded media outlets have is to generate shareholder PROFITS. That's it. This is why we have all the union busting, corporate malfeasance that hurts consumers and corporate policies that are literally destroying the habitability of the world. Greed rules, and our idol is the bronze bull on Wall Street - that is the 'god' America worships. It's all about greed.

This is why the corporate owned media does so much 'both-siderism' and has been hitting Biden on his age and now the Palestine issue while giving Trump a free pass - at least until he is stuck in criminal court.

The Policy Change that would Matter:
If the US Congress decided to force (because they would have to force) corporations to operate on a stakeholder model which would hold the interests of workers, consumers (INCLUDING TRUTH IN NEWS REPORTING) and the environment EQUAL in importance to shareholder profits, then we would solve a lot of seemingly intractable problems quickly. But we would have to boost funding for consumer and environmental protections, as well as make it much easier for workers to unionize.

Biden has proven a transformational president, and this is a policy (provided we win in November) that the three branches of our federal government should impose.

is all BS. There is a lot of fabricated data on this so called laptop which has been made up of some hacked material from Biden's devices and added material for sensational and in an attempt to make everything shady. When the idiot special counsel Weiss and his minions are so bloody stupid to claim sawdust shavings are cocaine and have their timelines wrong, which will show at the time of some of these entries, Hunter was not even in control of the devices they came from. It is all a complete frame job coming from Barr, Rudy and some Russian operatives. Barr needs to be outed on this and hopefully charged.
