CHICAGO, Ill. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzkers policy advocacy group is sinking resources into a Florida ballot initiative that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, an announcement that comes one day before the states six-week abortion ban is to go into effect.
Think Big America, Pritzkers not-for-profit group that has funded abortion rights efforts across the country, told NBC News Tuesday it is donating $500,000 to the Floridians Protecting Freedom ballot initiative campaign. The funding follows Think Bigs donation of $1 million to Nevada for its ballot campaign and $250,000 so far toward Arizonas ballot campaign.
Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to visit Florida on Wednesday, to bring attention to the abortion restrictions, which President Joe Biden's administration has framed as an example of Donald Trumps legacy after appointing three of the Supreme Court justices who voted to reverse Roe v. Wade.
The Democratic Party is really energized by
the attention that we are receiving from the administration, Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said in a Tuesday news availability. They understand that if you want to protect democracy and freedom across the entire country, that you have to come to the belly of the beast, which is here in the state of Florida.

(15,397 posts)But other than the abortion issue, which has won in states just as conservative as Florida, possibly having an effect on getting out the vote for Joe, democrats are way ahead of republicans in fund-raising, and that's probably not going to change especially with Trump using RNC funds for his court cases. They can afford to try for Florida, but republicans can't afford (metaphorically and fiscally) not to defend it, and they may spread themselves thin on states that are more firmly in the "swing" category. Plus, it's a huge psychological hit if they do have to defend what should be safe ground.

(16,729 posts)Best one in my lifetime, and a fighter for so many important things!
The repukes down in Southern Illinois hate him and our Democratic-controlled statehouse so much that there is at least one county down there that wants to secede and form a separate state: https://www.stlpr.org/government-politics-issues/2024-04-17/madison-county-illinois-secession-vote-pass
They resent not being able to control things like the state's abortion laws, but without the tax dollars from Chicago and its suburbs, they would be so screwed.

(16,729 posts)But that would mean 2 more (presumably) Repuke senators in Congress, as well as Illinois losing some of its electoral votes to a red area (maybe not many, but it would suck, regardless). From that standpoint, we're better off keeping 'em.
He is the best ever. This is not normal, either. Usually, we send our governors to jail.
