New Santorum Ad: Romney as "Rombo"
http://www.politico.com/playbook/By MIKE ALLEN | 02/15/12 6:42 AM EDT
FIRST LOOK: Rick Santorum goes up statewide in Michigan today with Rombo, a 30-second rebuttal ad by strategist John Brabender. The spot shows a Mitt Romney double (coif, cufflinks, wingtips) skulking into a musty, rusty parking garage and using a machine gun to spray mud at an elusive cardboard cutout of Santorum. The ad opens with a photo of Santorum and his family, with the candidate saying: Im Rick Santorum, and I approve this message.
Then, over music, a male narrator begins: Mitt Romneys negative attack machine is back, on full throttle. This time, Romneys firing his mud at RICK SANTORUM. [Sound of gunfire.] Romney and his super PAC have spent a staggering 20 million attacking fellow Republicans. Why? Because Romneys trying to hide from his big-government Romneycare, and his support for job-killing cap-and-trade. And in the end, Mitt Romneys ugly attacks are going to backfire.
As the spot closes, Rombo looks down to find mud splattered on his white Oxford. Type on the screen credits RushLimbaugh.com for: ROMNEY ADVISOR ADMITS ROMNEYCARE WAS BLUEPRINT FOR OBAMACARE. A Santorum aide wouldnt give the size of the buy, but said: Everyone in Michigan will see it. And the campaign says the spot will later be aired in other states. The Santorum campaign said the ad is aimed partly at telling the Romney team: Were not going to sit back and take it. Video http://bit.ly/wcAW72

A Santorum aide told my colleague Mike Allen that the ad would be in wide rotation in Michigan. Santorum had reserved less than $50,000 in air time in the state as of yesterday, so we'll have to see what kind of new money Santorum throws down and how much this is a play for free media with a stylistically clever ad.
Amazingly enough, this is the first time this primary season that one of Romney's opponents has had a response ad teed up to go as soon as the Romney/Restore Our Future hits start.

(6,440 posts)No doubt his next ad will show how down with the kids he is by showing him playing a game of Pacman on his Commodore 64 while listening to A Flock of Seagulls.

(3 posts)Did anyone notice that they used a real looking M-16 for some of the video and only switched to the "paint-gun" version for the close up shot? Subliminal messaging at its finest.

(5 posts)John Brabender has always fancied himself to be the dobbelganger of the role Richard Gere Played in this movie years ago, a hard-charging political consultant. It's not surprise that in that movie the Gere character does a spot where mud is splattered on his opponent. Sound familiar?

As a matter of fact, I would already venture that the FR folks are dumping Gingrich in favor of Frothy Mixture while in their Anti-Romney mode.

(12,041 posts)I think Santorum may be the first candidate in history to think it is a good idea to run an ad featuring himself with what appears to be Santorum smeared on the wall behind him. I really want Santorum to get the nomination, if he keeps giving us images like this it will be the funniest campaign ever.

(39,405 posts)If you follow Karl Rove's rule that every public appearance should make sense with the sound off, this is really an ad for Romney: He'll fight like trooper till the end even if he has to take a few shit bullets in his $200 french cuff shirt.
