NJ Gov. Christie vetoes gay marriage bill as vowed

http://news.yahoo.com/nj-gov-christie-vetoes-gay-marriage-bill-vowed-221536132.html

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gov. Chris Christie has followed through on his promise to reject a bill allowing same-sex marriage in New Jersey by quickly vetoing the measure Friday.

The veto came a day after the state Assembly passed the bill. The state Senate had passed it on Monday. Christie, a Republican who opposes same-sex marriage, had vowed "very swift action" once the bill reached his desk.

In returning the bill to the Legislature, Christie reaffirmed his view that voters should decide whether to change the definition of marriage in New Jersey. His veto also proposed creating an ombudsman to oversee compliance with the state's civil union law, which same-sex couples have said is flawed.

Leave it up to the voters? Idiocy. Way to go numbnuts. Keeping NJ in the 12th Century.

One of the reasons why Washington State just passed a marriage equality bill is because it's been proven that states allowing same-sex marriage discover it's beneficial to their economies.

I take it you're opposed to same-sex marriage by your comment. Anyone who's been following this issue in the news has already heard that studies show states ratifying marriage equality will enjoy economic gain as a result. According to a study posted on DU2 in 2007, that benefit was evident even five years ago.

"cute" headlines that work in the word "vow" into a Marriage story, it lays out a position that it's a big change for the state so that a constitutional amendment - which requires voters to decide - rather than just legislation. There's nothing wrong with that - unless people want to project their partisan bigotry on what should be a non-partisan human issue.

I cite Brown v Board as an action that would NEVER have taken place if public opinion decided human rights issues and the detrimental actions of following public opinion in Plessy v Ferguson.

EDIT TO ADD... I read the entire story when I commented originally. I have kept very close watch on this issue, as it directly affects me.

Are you saying that the people of New Jersey won't vote for this?

And should not be back-burnered until another time. These are people's lives and they have every right to live them. Human rights are not given by governments, they are recognized by them. Human rights are inherent with or without government approval. Recognition of our human rights is what we want and it is criminal to delay it.

Sue the government for treating us like second class citizens. If we can sue people like Gov.Chris Crisco maybe they will think twice about denying us rights. Being "single" your whole life and not being able to share in life benefits with your partner should be a crime. And some auto insurance companies charge you an extra $3.00 a month for being single. How can they do that? Most married women in the 50's didn't work, and if it wasn't for their husbands SSI they would be out in the street now. How can gays be assured the same life when their partner dies. If the government doesn't step in and change this attitude, they should be accountable for supporting us till the grave.

I saw an interview Christie did where he said that instead of agitating, civil rights supporters in the South in the early '60s would have been better off putting their rights to a vote.

Yeah, that would have worked out well. He loses. The arc of history will win out yet.

I want to say a great big FUCK YOU to Christie.

I'm not gay, so I don't really have a dog in this fight. But to be the governor of a state filled with people of all different stripes and to openly discriminate against a specific group of them is disgusting. We are all equal, even if we dig different things.

As an aside, I also am displeased with my fellow liberals calling Christie a fat fuck. He may be a fuck of the highest order, but to call him out for being fat... well, that's not cool. Fat people have feelings, too. (no snark here, I'm being serious)

Perhaps I could persuade you otherwise?

Do you perhaps have children, or think you will one day? Would you like them to be able to be happily married, regardless of the sex or gender of who they choose? How about any gay friends? Could you fight for them?

I'm straight. I've been married for eighteen years. If you listened to the pre-vote debate in our Legislature, there are multiple Republicans in the House that believe OUR marriage isn't valid, because we chose to not have children.

If you think this fight is just gay people, you need to rethink. It's all of us. Every adult that chooses to live a life different than the Republicans is under attack.

And, yeah, I'm pretty sick of reading the fat bigotry here, too. I'm very thankful I don't have to deal with them IRL.

I sincerely hope that the NJ legislature overrides the veto. I think it's appaling that there are more states in which it is legal to marry your cousin than to marry someone of the same sex. I like to lurk on freerepublic just because sometimes you can read just insane posistions, and one caught my eye a couple of weeks ago.. "There is no problem with equality. As a straight man, I'm not allowed to marry another man, same as any gay."
So many of their platform is stopping people from doing things. There are a few that are pro-SOPA. Anti-gay anything. Anti-pot.
Very few of their posistions are in favor of increasing freedom. But of course, we are the anti-American party. We are the haters of freedom. In the words of one of their flock: "Our women folk need to be home raising the next generation of moral, charactered, Christian patriots." That post was not being sarcastic. He was argueing against women in combat.
That is what we are fighting against. That narrow, sexist, anti-everything view. We need to be the party of freedom. It'll attract more people.

"Leave it up to the voters" on civil rights issue is code for "let the voters outlaw it" in pretty much all circumstances; if he wants a constitutional amendment then he wants one of those vile propositions that shows up in every general election.
