The Chinese government will never figure out what to do with their appropriations.

The ultimate protest...while I disagree with these suicidal acts, I can understand how powerful they are symbolically and how threatening they must be to the Chinese occupiers of Tibet.

Which is hard to say because that's where I'm living right now. They will fuck you over when they can. Their "leadership" is to let brutal dictators kill their own people (North Korea, Syria, Myanmar take your pick). I have a few students here who are quite liberal and I have encouraged them to 1) not get involved with the communist party (including taking a government job) and 2) to get the hell out of the country when they graduate.

I have the documentary Kim Jongilla and I'm thinking about showing it to students before I leave. I honestly couldn't give a hell if they kick me out.

Ps. Oh did I forget to say I got paid 2 weeks late this month. Talk about benefits.

they do monitor foreigners in their country, read email, check what websites you visit, open your mail, etc. PLEASE be careful. While living there, an acquaintance (from America) was pulled into the police station and was given two options: leave, or stay and have your hands broken. He went home.

I wouldn't put anything by them.

maybe your students should join and work their way up, slowly suggesting reform as they move in the machine.

I think in our lifetime, China won't change that much. That is why the students who speak English well and work hard I encourage them to leave. The higher the braindrain, the more it hurts the country.

I highly despise their policies on North Korea. China doesn't want a united Korea for fear the country would 1) become stronger and 2) American troops would remain there. The truth is reunification would be a nightmare and would set Korea back about a decade financially. I read somewhere that something like 750,000 peacekeeping troops would be needed in North Korea once the government collapsed. Certainly the US wouldn't be willing to contribute that many, so it would have to be a coalition of several nations including Russia and China, the two least cooperative countries.
