'Hundreds gather' in China after self-immolation
Hundreds of Tibetans gathered in China's southwest to hold a vigil for a young Buddhist monk who set himself on fire, a rights group said, in the latest self-immolation to hit the country.
The 18-year-old monk, identified as Nangdrol, set himself alight Sunday in Sichuan province's Rangtang county, where one Tibetan was reportedly shot dead by security forces last month, the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) said on Monday.
Citing exiled Tibetan sources with contacts in the area, ICT said Nangdrol had died and his body was taken back to a local monastery. The information was confirmed by the London-based Free Tibet.
Monks did not comply with police orders to hand over the body and more than 1,000 people gathered to hold a vigil on Sunday evening, ICT said.

(37,540 posts)The ultimate protest...while I disagree with these suicidal acts, I can understand how powerful they are symbolically and how threatening they must be to the Chinese occupiers of Tibet.

(22,000 posts)Which is hard to say because that's where I'm living right now. They will fuck you over when they can. Their "leadership" is to let brutal dictators kill their own people (North Korea, Syria, Myanmar take your pick). I have a few students here who are quite liberal and I have encouraged them to 1) not get involved with the communist party (including taking a government job) and 2) to get the hell out of the country when they graduate.
I have the documentary Kim Jongilla and I'm thinking about showing it to students before I leave. I honestly couldn't give a hell if they kick me out.
Ps. Oh did I forget to say I got paid 2 weeks late this month. Talk about benefits.

I only have 4 more months and I'm out of here. I'll keep my middle finger down until I'm on the plane.

(3,874 posts)they do monitor foreigners in their country, read email, check what websites you visit, open your mail, etc. PLEASE be careful. While living there, an acquaintance (from America) was pulled into the police station and was given two options: leave, or stay and have your hands broken. He went home.

please be very careful, and remember nothing enters or leaves the great firewall of china without being approved.
one last thing. the best way to defeat a monster is from the inside.
maybe your students should join and work their way up, slowly suggesting reform as they move in the machine.
just a thought.

(22,000 posts)I think in our lifetime, China won't change that much. That is why the students who speak English well and work hard I encourage them to leave. The higher the braindrain, the more it hurts the country.
I highly despise their policies on North Korea. China doesn't want a united Korea for fear the country would 1) become stronger and 2) American troops would remain there. The truth is reunification would be a nightmare and would set Korea back about a decade financially. I read somewhere that something like 750,000 peacekeeping troops would be needed in North Korea once the government collapsed. Certainly the US wouldn't be willing to contribute that many, so it would have to be a coalition of several nations including Russia and China, the two least cooperative countries.

(1 post)Thank you for drawing attention to this story and the struggle of the people of Tibet for Independence from China.
Please be aware that mainstream media sources reproduce China's illegitimate claims to sovereignty over Tibet in their reports.
When we reproduce these reports by direct copying and through links, we are unwittingly and probably unintentionally repeating this.
