(37,540 posts)Bill and a lot of hi-profile people like himself are starting to realize what a federal government filled with teabagging cultural warriors could mean to this country. And they would be going after people like Bill first.

(656 posts)OLD it's not just up to the rich to help we have to stand up also,i agree with you i would like to see the Warren Buffets of the democratic party put more into it.I would also like to see more from everyday people, even if it was only 5 or 10 dollars, just think if the 99% each sent 10 bucks.
Old and In the Way
(37,540 posts)Bill understands this and he's putting his checkbook where his mouth is. That doesn't preclude the rest of us contributing what we can do to join the fight. Everyone needs to put their money into the pot. Hopefully, 100MM Americans could add their voice via financial contributions. If we could raise an average of $100 from 100mm people, there'd be no question where the voice and $ is with the American people. It would make the individual donations of the Republican sugar-daddies puny, by comparison.

(6,664 posts)Not a big fan, but I do like his show on HBO. His stand-up, in my opinion, is not that special.

(24,382 posts)I think it is due to the fact that he's very topical but not very insightful. There is nothing special about it.
He's good for TV but not a live audience. He doesn't have the magic necessary to work a crowd and develop a rapport with them.

(11,461 posts)I am now, just for the fact that he has donated a million dollars shows he has
woken up just as others like him will be waking up.
I can foresee more celebs like Bill coming forward and donating more money, just
watch.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)his show is actually really good. i mean, it's just his stand-up, but it's all at once serious and funny.
and it was still good even though the sound was not good (at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall). yes, it is ironic that two shows there, had sound problems and even Maher joked about having sound problems at the Symphony hall.
i'll try to see him in San Jose next time.

seems too gratuitous sometimes and you can tell it really embarrasses
his guests (i.e. Rev Al last week).

Maher puts one-million dollars behind pro-Obama Super PAC
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/24/maher-puts-one-million-dollars-behind-pro-obama-super-pac/
Excerpt:
Mahers million dollar donation will substantially boost the coffers of the Super PAC which raised only $58,815.83 in January, according to a report filed earlier in the week with the Federal Election Commission.

WOW! That super-pac was really having a hard time raising money it seems!

(9,602 posts)If I had it I would give it to the Obama Super PAC just to show the GOP how bad and how out of control Super PAC money can get.
Another thing I would do is give my absurdly over the top amounts of money to Democratic Super PACs anonymously. If enough rich Democrats would do that watch how soon the Republican party starts crying for campaign finance reform. But it has to be completely stupid lopsided amounts of money going to Democratic causes to drive the point home. It has to become so out of hand that the GOP will finally say enough is enough.

(1,416 posts)be a member of the top 1% and give a million dollars and be taken seriously. All Bill and Obama have done is become a part of the corrupt system.
And so sorry but Bill's money influence is just as bad as any other special interests. His act still makes ordinary folks count less.
That is what gets me about his show.... a bunch of multimillionaires pretending that they get what real life is like for working Americans.

(18,161 posts)But living within the rules established by the SCOTUS is, unfortunately, necessary in order to fight the opposition. I don't like it but I don't like the other side having the edge.

Tying Obama's financial hands behind his back isn't going to achieve any long term progressive goals.

The dems need to win to get rid of such crap as Citizens United.
The next president will appoint as many as 3 USSC justices, so the next president absolutely must be Obama, not one of the Republicans. People who think it doesn't matter which party the president comes from keep forgetting that only one party appoints the likes of Thomas, Scalia, Alito, and Roberts.

(793 posts)Mr. Maher being an atheist and all, has I guess figured out that God did not like him putting on some of the right wing nuts that he has put on lately. The President and the Democratic party as well can use the money. I figure they will need more down the line as well, so keep the purse strings open.
I don't even care that you still figure that you are a Libertarian.

(1 post)Was lucky enough to see him live ....and he is wonderful. I have been a fan since...yes Murder She Wrote. I love him. He is one of the sharpest smartest men out there, he tells it like it is and makes it easy for anyone who wants to listen to understand the Truth...something lacking on the right....they seem to relish lies...I love that he gave this to Obama..now we know he is an Independent for Obama....love you Bill.
If you get the chance to see him live it is great!
