CHP officers hurt; (Calif.) state Capitol protest turns into near riot
Source: Sacramento Bee
What started as an orderly rally by an alleged white supremacist group at the state Capitol turned into a near riot this afternoon when protesters from Occupy Oakland and other groups began throwing objects and injured California Highway Patrol officers trying to keep the two factions apart.
A CHP officer was pepper sprayed by the Occupy protesters and another was bloodied and injured tackling a fleeing suspect. Other officers may have been injured by hurled objects, officials said.
The violence lasted only minutes but tensions had grown throughout the day as members of a counter-rally -- later joined by Occupy Oakland protesters -- faced off against members of a group called South Africa Project that claimed to be trying to raise awareness for what they said was the killing of whites by blacks in South Africa.
State Senate sergeant-at-arms Tony Beard said the South Africa Project, which he called "a white supremacist organization," had received permits to protest on the south steps of the Capitol for three hours Monday but the counter-protesters had not and were told to stay on the sidewalk surrounding the Capitol.

(3,574 posts)If you ask me. Not in Oakland, yet the counter protesters are identified as Occupy?

(16,020 posts)How do they know it was occupy(if it indeed was occupy) that were the ones who threw things and not the counter protesters. Weird article.

(6,086 posts)Not exactly a hop, skip and a jump. I'm a bit skeptical about Occupy Oakland coming up here to cause a ruckus. BTW, It could be more than 90 minutes if the traffic is bad, which is often is.

(3,574 posts)The story in that paper seems to want to discredit Occupy Oakland. The nice nazis (alleged!) were apparantly well behaved laughing their little hitler mustaches off watching the cops beat the shit out of people for "taunting" them

(253 posts)A group of Occupy Oakland protesters came over to assist in the counter-protest against these neo-Nazis. They were joined by Occupy Sacramento protesters (much more passive resistance oriented group), as well as a whole bunch of people who'd seen the anonymous fliers posted throughout downtown and Midtown since the weekend about the "Nazi skinheads" protesting at the capitol.
These are in fact white supremacists. And yes, when the police started pushing, the counter-protesters pushed back. I've been told by a lot of people that it was the Oakland group that led the push-back--apparently, they've got some experience with this!
(I'm a writer for a local pub - not the Bee. One of our reporters also confirmed this.)

(4,012 posts)Two cops injured, one tackling a fleeing protestor and the other supposedly hit by a thrown object. The object was probably thrown at the racists, but hit a cop instead.
