Senior Romney Health Adviser: Obamacare Can Move Health Care System In The Right Direction
By Igor Volsky on Feb 29, 2012 at 8:30 am
Mike Leavitt, President George W. Bushs former Secretary of Health and Human Services and a senior adviser to Mitt Romney, says the Affordable Care Act could help reduce health care costs and transform Americas existing fee-for-service health care model. In an apparent break from Romneys pledge to easily repeal the law, Leavitt told ModernHealthcare that the measure could help move the nation in the right direction:
Mike Leavitt, the former secretary of HHS under President George W. Bush and current Romney adviser, said the federal governments historic $15 trillion debt will drive hard changes in healthcare system to reduce its costs. Those changes, including moving across healthcare from a fee-for-service model to outcomes based payment, may be facilitated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Romney has repeatedly urged repeal and replacement of the law.
The law gives the secretary authority to do certain things that are clearly aimed at trying to move us in this direction, he said in a brief interview after addressing a Washington gathering of the Cancer Action Network. A lot of it will depend on how aggressively the secretary chooses to use the authorities in the law to move us in that direction.

(7,865 posts)That the conservative media outlets, having overhyped Michigan as the 'end all-be all,' have made his advisors believe that it is now time to pretend to be open minded.

(7,672 posts)Don't know how to interpret this story. A couple guesses:
1. Plausible deniability. Leavitt? Never heard of him.
2. Pink meat for "moderates." Romney has not completely sold out to the wackos.
3. Wakeup call for Obama supporters. Obama and Romney basically agree on health care. The difference is who they have to string along to get elected.

(60 posts)You know that implanted circuit that makes Republicans believe that their solutions turn into "socialist nightmares" once Obama or the Democrats agree to implement them?
It sounds like Mr. Leavitt's has a defect in his.

(50,023 posts)See!?! That means it's good right?
since the idea is really a rehash of the 1993 republican health care plan, why shouldn't republicans love it?
With a little 70's Nixoncare thrown in for good measure.

(758 posts)to build, and will likely need adjustments along the way. The GOP is against it because they know once people figure out the benefits, including long term cost reduction in healthcare, people will like it.

(276 posts)Now these two programs are very popular because they work. Once people see that Obamacare is very beneficial to them, they will also embrace the program because it will also work.
