US immigration system 'completely backwards': Bobby Jindal
Source: Times of India
WASHINGTON: Describing the current US immigration system as "completely backwards", Indian-American Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal said the country needs a system of "high walls and a broad gate".
"When it comes to immigration, we've got a completely backwards system today. What I believe we need is a system of high walls and a broad gate. Right now, we've got the opposite. We've got low walls and a narrow gate," Jindal told CNN in an interview.
"What I mean by that is we make it very difficult for people to come here legally. We make it very easy for people to come here illegally. As the son of immigrants, I think that, certainly, a lot of people think we should let more people come in to our country because it's compassionate for them, and it certainly is," said the 42-year-old Republican leader whose parents were immigrants from Punjab.
"I think we should also let more people come into our country legally because it's good for us. When people want to come here, work hard, get an education, play by the rules, that's good for America. And so, I think that this is a problem we can address. I think our system right now is completely backwards," he said.

(4,003 posts)the walls weren't high enough nor the gates broad enough when his parents invaded Louisiana!

(11,014 posts)However, Republicans will only support high walls and a narrow gate. They don't want immigrants because immigrants are poor and vote democratic.

(33,982 posts)I went to their party site and I expected to find that specific language, but here it is in original form. I often hear it summarized as a strong wall/wide gate immigration policy.
"3.4 Free Trade and Migration
We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Political freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals not be unreasonably constrained by government in the crossing of political boundaries. Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders. However, we support control over the entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a credible threat to security, health or property."
Of course, along with that comes cheap/slave labor produced goods, goods of questionable quality or even toxic goods. They want free movement of people AND trade.
There is considerable overlap between the republican party and the LP, and some are leveraging that. You'll hear the ron paulista faction cheering Jindal for this. (But they still won't like him)

(25,111 posts)Well it seems the GOPers refuse to bring immigration to the center. Oh well, I'm seeing 2014 as a bright spot for anything that is not Republican.

(27,585 posts)The process is long, tedious, EXPENSIVE, and prone to bureaucratic error.
A lot of times I gave thought to how much cheaper it would have been to fly my wife to Mexico, or Canada and get her smuggled in. It certainly would have been cheaper and faster.
A friend of my wife met during the process, had the entry of her 14 month old child denied though she was approved. They told her to file when she arrived in the states. It has been almost a year now and the mother is still separated from the child.
This is really, really typical of our completely messed-up immigration system.
