Sochi 2014: Gay rights protests to target Russia's games

Gay rights activists across the world are holding a day of protests against the Russian government, just two days before the Winter Olympics begin in the southern resort of Sochi.

The protests seek to persuade sponsors of the event to speak out over Russia's controversial laws on homosexuality.

Last year, Russia banned the promotion of "non-traditional" sexuality - widely seen as an attack on gay rights.

Protests are expected to take place in 19 cities around the globe.

They include London, New York, Paris and St Petersburg.

Given the controversy over the law we knew protests were going to happen. It will be interesting to see how Russia chooses to react. My guess is they are going to go (for a lack of a better word) batshit.

The smart thing to do would be for Putin to order the police to just clear the roads in St Petersburg, and to simply work security in a basic way. Allow it to happen peacefully. Once its over, everything is back to normal, Putin will be able to say "see?..we allow peaceful protest on this issue".

Then they could actually USE this as a propaganda tool. Of course once the Olympics are over, all bets are off. But we'll see.
