Whistle-blower fired from Hanford nuclear site
Source: USA Today
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Whistle-blower Donna Busche, who raised safety concerns at the nation's most polluted nuclear weapons production site, was fired Tuesday from her job at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.
Busche's complaints are part of a string of whistle-blower and other claims related to the design and safety of an unfinished waste treatment plant at Hanford.
Busche, 50, said she was called into the office Tuesday morning and told she was being fired for cause.

Busche is the second Hanford whistle-blower to be fired by URS in recent months. Walter Tamosaitis, who also raised safety concerns about the plant, was fired in October after 44 years of employment.

A mysterious cluster of severe birth defects in rural Washington state is confounding health experts, who say they can find no cause, even as reports of new cases continue to climb.
Federal and state officials wont say how many women in a three-county area near Yakima, Wash., have had babies with anencephaly, a heart-breaking condition in which theyre born missing parts of the brain or skull. And they admit they haven't interviewed any of the women in question, or told the mothers there's a potentially widespread problem....

(1,423 posts)there has long been pancreatic and liver cancer clusters. We will probably never know the extent of the contamination. The wind blows predominately West to East from the reservation.
The Yucca Mountain idea was embraced by Washington State for obvious reasons. It was like Guiliani shipping his crime problem across the river to Jersey. They must have known that the containers were deteriorating when they tried to get Congress and Nevada to vote for it. The secrecy and scandal run deep on this one.
