American inmate killed in Israeli prison after shooting guards

Israeli special forces raided a prison in central Israel on Sunday, killing one of the country’s most notorious inmates after he seized a guard’s weapon, shot three guards and barricaded himself inside the compound.

Police identified the inmate as Samuel Sheinbein, an American who fled to Israel after committing a gruesome murder in Maryland in 1997 and whose case sparked a high-profile row between the two allies.

Police special forces rushed to this prison in central Israel after Sheinbein stole the weapon and shot three guards, wounding two of them seriously. A standoff ensued, with counter-terrorism units dispatched to the scene. The inmate then opened fire again before the forces killed him, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Sheinbein, 34, was tried in Israel in 1999, two years after he fled to the country and successfully sought refuge from extradition, enraging Maryland authorities and briefly threatening US aid to the Jewish state.

I think the Israeli government really goofed when they refused to extradite.

They had a law barring extradition of Israeli citizens. That law has since been changed so the citizen has to have substantial ties to Israel.

I'm not big on the death penalty, but perhaps this was a fitting end. I, too, hope those guards will recover.

Sheinbein evaded apprehension by Maryland police, but needed assistance from his parents.[3] Sheinbein fled to Israel with the help of his father, Sol Sheinbein, an attorney who held dual citizenship in the United States and Israel. Sol Sheinbein allegedly brought Samuel his passport, purchased him an airline ticket to Tel Aviv, Israel, and drove him to John F. Kennedy International Airport to flee the United States[3]

Once in Israel, Samuel Sheinbein applied for and received Israeli citizenship. Being Jewish and as the son of an Israeli national, he was eligible for automatic Israeli citizenship. Sheinbein's brother Robert then flew to Israel and met him in his hotel room, and brought him his first bottle of wine and a prostitute.[4] His partying came to an end when he was hospitalized for a drug overdose.[3] After being hospitalized, Sheinbein was arrested, and US authorities were notified of his presence in Israel.[3]

Montgomery County murder suspect who fled to Israel in 1997 killed in prison shoot-out

By Dan Morse and Ruth Eglash

One of Montgomery County’s {Maryland} most notorious killers, Samuel Sheinbein, was fatally shot Sunday during a firefight with guards inside a prison in Israel. At least three guards were injured, one of them critically.

Sheinbein, 33, was a 17-year-old high school student in 1997 when he and a friend killed another teenager, used a power saw to cut off the victim’s arms and legs and wrapped the torso in trash bags. Then, with detectives on his heels, Sheinbein fled to Israel, where he was able to fend off extradition. He eventually pleaded guilty there in connection with the killing of Alfredo Tello Jr., 19, and was sentenced to 24 years behind bars.
....

The investigation of the Montgomery County murder began on Sept. 19, 1997, according to court records. Two real estate agents had arrived at a vacant house on Breeze Hill Lane, about three miles north of downtown Wheaton, to prepare it to be shown. They went inside, smelled foul odors, made their way to the garage and “noticed a black plastic bag with what they felt was blood seeping from it onto the garage floor,” a police affidavit on file said. ... The agents left the home and called police. Inside the bag was Tello’s charred and dismembered body.

Within 24 hours, detectives had assembled a series of clues pointing to Sheinbein. Inside the garage of his home nearby, there was evidence of a recent fire, along with an empty a box for a Makita power saw. That box matched a saw found in the other garage, near the torso in the trash bag. Also found in that garage were rubber gloves, propane cylinders and a Home Depot bag with a receipt indicating the saw and cylinders had been bought several days earlier. ... Montgomery prosecutors accused Sheinbein’s father, Sol Sheinbein, of helping his son get to Israel. They charged Sol Sheinbein, who eventually relocated to Israel himself, with obstructing and hindering, according to a warrant still on file in Montgomery County.

I don't expect there are going to be too many tears shed over this.

Every time Israel brings up Pollard, the US should bring us this POS and his parents.

So Israel changed it laws but the person still has to return to Israel if convicted to serve their sentence there? Fuck that shit.

Following that embarrassment, Israel changed its laws to allow the extradition of Israeli citizens on condition that they are returned to Israel to serve any sentence imposed.

Bring that up too, next time they mention Pollard.

And people like Sheinbein are why I am in favor of the Death Penalty.
