Report: Sony To Close 20 Stores, Lay Off 1,000 Employees

Source: Gamesided

Approximately 1,000 Sony Electronics employees will soon be looking for work as the company is set to shut down 20 of its stores in order to “maintain its competitiveness in an evolving consumer electronics market” in the United States. This comes off the heels of Sony announcing 5,000 layoffs as well as the sale of its PC business in order to continue its company-wide restructure.

The report, which came from Twice, states that the 1,000 layoffs represent roughly 1/3 of that departments workforce.

“While these moves were extremely tough, they were absolutely necessary to position us in the best possible place for future growth,” Mike Fasulo, president and COO of Sony Electronics, said in a statement. “I am entirely confident in our ability to turn the business around, in achieving our preferred future, and continue building on our flawless commitment to customer loyalty through the complete entertainment experience only Sony can offer.”

The company is expected to put more of a focus into content, gaming and hardware over the coming years as a way to try and turn the company’s profits around.

Are you asking to be shielded from the real world? If you only want to read good news then maybe you'd prefer my thread about Tesla hiring 6,500.

Perhaps you are reading too much into the post.

Edited to add a link to another DUer who has also noticed this disturbing trend:

A Japanese owned Company? Mike Casulo .. that name doesn't sound Japanese.. Did the Japanese company sell out to the United States? Or...is this guy just the Representative to the US branch of the Corporation?

8. I used to love Sony Stores before Sony lost its way.

Went into one for the first time in Chicago on a trip in the 90s. Spent a couple of hundred dollars on some portable speakers and very nice earbuds.

Sadly, they lost their creative edge just in time for Apple to become the cool and cutting edge retail store.

Probably a good indication why they're having to do layoffs at said stores.
