Toon: Romney fixes the hole in the safety net
Friday rant: The real Romney howler edition
By Tom Toles
I guess when you pack two outrageous statements into one paragraph, it might not be surprising for the media to latch onto the wrong one. Romneys clunker about not caring about the very poor because they have all kinds of safety net to comfortably lounge around in was certainly bad enough, but in the predictable way. He was merely trying once again to play the Republican version of class warfare by implying that those other people down there at the bottom are soaking up resources that belong to you and he was going to take care of you now instead.
His explanation that he cared about them after all and if there were holes in the safety net he would fix them was more astounding than his original sentence, both in the way it completely contradicted it and how at variance it was to his actual policy proposals. Yeah hell fix them, all right.
But no, the REAL stunner was his blatant lie that he doesnt care about the rich. Wowsa! Again, take a look at his actual policy proposals. MORE tax cuts for the rich, anyone? Hey, he said, the rich are doing just fine. Uh, no, they are doing just a huge quantum way giant lot better than just fine, they are running away with the ball, the game, the wealth, the power and the governing apparatus in its entirety. Do you think they are writing him that tidal wave of mammoth checks because he doesnt care about them? I mean, we do a lot of weird pretending in the way we talk about and understand US politics, but are we really going to let that claim go unchallenged?

The rungs of the ladder leading upward from poverty to the middle class have been sawed off since Richard Nixon. Carter and Clinton did some repairs; but, mostly it's been a downward trend for any poor person with aspirations of bettering themselves.

We have to be able to call BS on this. Orwellian doublethink comes to mind; the agendas of the politician / koch alliance is so well known, yet they run entire campaigns on false pretenses strategized by think tanks who study and influence what people want to hear.
Think tanks produce it, politicians and 'news' media shovels it, repugs ingest it, and the rest of the country is covered in it. I am sick of all this BS.
