3 Meds with the Craziest Side Effects Ever

by Madeline Haller February 9, 2012, 02:00 am EST

Sure, medicine is supposed to make you feel better—but before you go popping prescription pills, you may want to look into their side effects.

Patients who are taking the new anti-clotting medication Pradaxa have a 33 percent higher risk of experiencing vascular complications such as a heart attack or acute coronary syndrome, says a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Yet even though there was an increased risk for experiencing a heart attack, the authors noted that the meta-analysis found that the overall rate of death was actually lower for those on Praxada—4.83 percent versus 5.02 percent in the control groups.

And that’s not the only pill with some scary side effects. Check out these popular medications—some of the side effects are bizarre, to say the least.

Ambien

Ambien (zolpidem tartrate) is commonly prescribed to treat insomnia. But upon closer inspection, it appears this little pill does much more than help the sleep-deprived catch some Zs. According to early case studies published in the journal Sleep Medicine, patients who were on Ambien began developing odd habits such as “sleep eating”— some having no memory of their odd behavior upon waking. Yet as time passed (and the side effects continued to worsen), the FDA slapped this on Ambien’s Medication Guide: “After taking AMBIEN, you may get up out of bed while not being fully awake and do an activity that you do not know you are doing. The next morning, you may not remember that you did anything during the night.”

I think it is for one of the ED pills, it says, "If you experience sudden loss of sight or hearing contact your doctor immediately." Does that mean if I'm not on the medicine and I suddenly go deaf or blind I shouldn't be concerned?

Helps with my neuropathy. I have to admit it took about 2 weeks to stop feeling jittery and scalp tingly. But I stuck with after some advice from other people on it and now it works great. If I go off it though.... there is a bad depression crash.

Screaming at the top of my lungs for no real reason, I scared myself so much I had to stop taking it.

Cannabis is my drug of choice because it helps me with stress and sleep, but unfortunately it has the side-effect of prison in this backward state.

by the new biologicals like Humira and Remicade. I listen to the list of possible side effects and say forget it. The same goes for Lyrica and Cymbalta, which they're prescribing for fibro. The old SSRIs did nothing for me and I doubt these would, either, besides, that list of side effects is daunting.

I just wonder if there are others out there like me who listen to the list of catastrophes that have befallen people who have taken it in large clinical trials and say to hell with it.

Direct advertising to people who can't self prescribe might be producing a backlash. It's high time. The decision to allow it was the stupidest advertising decision, ever.

My doctor prescribed them because I had some minor anxiety issues at the time. I was in my early twenties at the time and you can imagine how hard it is to admit that you peed the bed. Needless to say, after this happened a few times I asked to be taken off the medication. Nothing like that has happened before or since so it all points to the medicine.

On another note, I was on Accutane in high school for severe acne. Luckily I didn't have any of the nasty side effects that were deemed possible with that medicine, but they were potentially bad. Check them out if you get a chance because I don't remember them all.

I was on a low dose of Ambien (10 mg/night) for about 3 months last year and it kicked my ass. I had horrible, vivid nightmares and would wake up exhausted as if I didn't sleep at all, face in a puddle of drool and sore jaw/neck (and other body parts) from essentially just blacking out where I sat.

Walked around in a haze and would catch myself just fixating on one word or image on my pc screen at work during the day - totally zoning out.

I went cold turkey over a long weekend and it was HORRIBLE - nausea, sweats, more weird dreams - but I knew I had to get off that shit because I was NOT getting 'rest' while using it.

I feel bad for people who are addicted to, or are long term users of, it.

and the weird side effect was that I couldn't keep my eyes closed. I was sick in bed, feeling lousy, and my eyes would pop open every time I tried to close them. I stayed awake reading until the effect wore off.

Nothing like that has happened before or since.

Shame they can't sell it for that purpose; it would be safer than casual sex.

IIRC Viagra and its ilk were discovered accidentally -- a certain drug in trials left the men smiling ear to ear, and it took a while to find out why.

you remember correctly eppur-se-muova. It was either Brazil or Argentina that they were testing a drug that they hoped would regrow hair for bald men. They had about 250 on the drug and 250 taking a placebo. It didn't work at all, but they had to find out why none of the control group asked if they could keep taking it while about half of the group getting the drug wanted more of it.

Cipro ( the anti-biotic)- Spontaneously rupturing tendons.

I was a victim of the other extreme rare side effect: Peripheral Neuropathy in all 4 limbs. By the time they figured it out, I couldn't move.

Fun times.......

I can't have quinolonebased anti-biotics and this year went into Aniphilaxis when given Bactrim ( sp?) so now sulpher based ones are out too.

I took an Ambien about a month ago and found myself on the floor having fallen between the kitchen table and the window. I whacked my arm on the window sill so hard that it still hurts and the bruising is just now clearing up. I have never fallen while asleep in my life! I also noticed after being jolted awake that I had a nice little snack laid out on the kitchen table.

I haven't taken it since and don't plan to. I still have no idea how I got from my bed to the kitchen and onto the floor, but it scared the crap out of me. I feel very lucky that I didn't break my arm!
