Robert Reich: The loony right is a clear and present danger.

Robert Reich
As Santorum and Romney Battle for the Loony Right, the Rest of Us Should Not Gloat

....................

They're losing even more Americans now, as the four remaining GOP candidates seek to outdo one another in their race for the votes of the loony right that's taken over the Grand Old Party.

But the rest of us have reason to worry.

A party of birthers, creationists, theocrats, climate-change deniers, nativists, gay-bashers, anti-abortionists, media paranoids, anti-intellectuals, and out-of-touch country clubbers cannot govern America.

Yet even if they lose the presidency on Election Day they're still likely to be in charge of at least one house of Congress as well as several state legislators and governorships. That's a problem for the nation.

If the Dems care (and we do) we have to turn out to vote and continue to have sane candidates. This righteous wrongs will tear this country and wprod apart. It is good material fir late night but now they won't even have to make a joke out of what is said.

The insanity has been growing for decades and it's becoming a serious threat to our future.
If this continues, where is it going?
Will it grow large enough to push the rest of us out?
Will it shrink until it fizzles out in a whimper?
Will it keep putting on pressure until the whole country explodes? And then what?

It waxes and wanes but overall has been gaining influence for the last 30 years.
Back in 1980 talk radio was a mix of views but the dominant attitude was liberal.
That's completely disappeared.

If there is an earth shattering upset like WWII it might straighten things out but without that I have no idea where it's all going.
Maybe this is the real fourth turning that was predicted back in the 90's.

... but an Obama re-election and Democratic control of both the House and Senate is the ONLY outcome that stands a chance of stabilizing the nation, and perhaps even the world. Gays and lesbians openly serving in the military, healthcare reform kicking in more and more, unemployment rate keeps falling, higher CAFE standards taking effect, and the world isn't ending so perhaps the American people embrace a larger, more substantive stimulus, which starts producing a real recovery.

If the GOOP keeps the House, or gets the Senate and loses the House, or Gaia forbid it they get both, it will be two more years of Republican obstructionism. The 2014 midterms, the American people might start thinking "Maybe the GOP is the answer" and then 2016 could turn into a frightening shitstorm.

The Republicans are losing people left and right, no pun intended. They lost me. The RW libertarians were very compelling, until I figured out I was a LW libertarian.

group loose and even more rabid. As we move closer to victory they become more dangerous because they are afraid and angery. They have ruled the world their way for so long that they cannot see any possibility of change that will work for them so they fight back and they are not particular about the ethics of their fight.

We need to vote and continue to fight for the progressive change we want especially in the areas we have already made some progress. We need to support those who are fighting back: OWS, Wikileaks, Annonymous and activist groups. We need to continue to build our own media sources both on MSNBC and Current TV plus all the other channels that are progressive. When we finally get what we want on a larger scale and they see that they cannot win in the polls they may become more violent but eventually they will do what they did in the 60s - hide out until they can rise again.

Unfortunately I think it takes a few generations for these stupid ideas to die out. But as we can see now that may not happen. We are fighting battles today that we won in the 70s. Maybe Tom Paxton is correct. An idea never dies - good or bad.

nominee.

On the one hand, the country and public discourse deserves a better candidate than Rick to carry the banner of a portion of the country. He's fringe. Borderline delusional and out of touch. A liar despite his purported moral code. In some way he represents all of us to the rest of the world...supposed to be one of our best, an american put forward by the people to debate the issues of the day with the incumbent. But, he's an embarrassment in the way GWB and Palin were. Doesn't reflect well on us....

On the other hand, it would be good for this detached fringe wing of RW politics (represents maybe 20% of the country but controls a bigger slice of politics than that) to have to get up there and be part of a real debate, not just in front of Fox and Friends but with real analysis and real questions. Having a real comparison would result in a beat down. Remember, the vast majority of the public agrees with the progressive stance on almost every issue polled and away from the isolation that Fox provides some candidates it would be obvious who has the public interest in mind. The kind of extreme RW politics and ends-justify-the-means tactics we've seen since Dukakis might just have to go away for a while. Hartmann has been talking about the long trend of RW politics alternating between extreme and moderate. Would be good to have a moderate gop for a while that doesn't filibuster everything, attach crushing ideological poison pills to bills, lie and smear, disrespect a sitting president in an unprecedented way, refuse to staff official government positions, and refuse to solve problems with legislation.
