Majority Of White Americans Say They Believe Whites Face Discrimination

A majority of whites say discrimination against them exists in America today, according to a poll released Tuesday from NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

"If you apply for a job, they seem to give the blacks the first crack at it," said 68-year-old Tim Hershman of Akron, Ohio, "and, basically, you know, if you want any help from the government, if you're white, you don't get it. If you're black, you get it."

More than half of whites — 55 percent — surveyed say that, generally speaking, they believe there is discrimination against white people in America today. Hershman's view is similar to what was heard on the campaign trail at Trump rally after Trump rally. Donald Trump catered to white grievance during the 2016 presidential campaign and has done so as president as well.

Notable, however, is that while a majority of whites in the poll say discrimination against them exists, a much smaller percentage say that they have actually experienced it. Also important to note is that 84 percent of whites believe discrimination exists against racial and ethnic minorities in America today.

I'm beyond words.... This is the kind of mindset that rises from decades of AM talk radio and Fox News

I seriously doubt whites have an entirely ego and victim based concept of "discrimination".

From other white people.

Esp. from those white people richer, come from a better neighborhood, and/or those with more social capital than them.

Of course, that's not what what the average "white people are being discriminated against" white person thinks or is supposed to think though, right?

Here's an experiment for any fellow white people who think discrimination against them is coming from 'below' them (From one of 'those' people, the ones right wing media tells you to be afraid of)... Find a notice telling you that you've been passed over for some job especially if it was one you felt qualified for. Is it written in Spanish? How many times does it say "Allahu Ackbar" or "Not hiring you because Black Luves Matter"?

There's your problem right there.

If I was asked “Have you ever experienced discrimination?” I would have to say yes.

If I was asked,”Do you face racial discrimination?” the answer would be no.

Like all surveys the truth or lack of truth stems from the quality of the methodology.

There are whites out there that believe that blacks and Hispanics are lucky duckies.

But, as the article notes, most cannot point to any real examples.

I know I have experienced age discrimination. But I don’t think I lost out to a minority. I lose out to younger, college educated white males or females.

But it's not like it's been widespread or pervasive.

At least that's not my perception.
