The Vatican Says 'Maybe' to Hysterectomies

The Vatican has long viewed a hysterectomy as taboo because it causes permanent sterilization. Now they're softening their stance—but only in cases of life and death.

ROME—When 42-year-old Luisa Del Vecchio couldn’t take the debilitating pain caused by her endometriosis any longer, she was faced with a moral dilemma. As a staunch Catholic who teaches at a private Catholic school in Florence, she knew well that having a hysterectomy by choice over medical necessity would be a sin because it would cause permanent sterilization—in other words, irreversible birth control.

Del Vecchio, who has four children, has always believed in the Catholic Church’s indisputable teachings on birth control: Sex should only be between a man and a woman, and only under conditions that leave the woman “open to the possibility of conception.” That means elective hysterectomies on the basis of pain alone, not life-or-death situations, were a sin.

Del Vecchio had the hysterectomy anyway in 2015. “After consulting with my priest who tried to talk me out of it, I decided I just couldn’t deal with the pain any longer,” she told The Daily Beast. “I was missing work. I often couldn’t get out of bed. I wasn’t able to be a good mother to the children I had. I prayed and went through it even though I was defying God’s will.”

The decision to have her uterus removed turned out to be the easy part. She searched in vain for a physician in a Catholic hospital in Florence who would perform what was a voluntary procedure that defied church teaching. Del Vecchio felt it necessary to consult only devout Catholic doctors, but they all tried to talk her out of it. Finally, she found a female Catholic doctor in Milan who agreed to perform the surgery and who assured her that God would forgive her—eventually.

Just what the world needs. A bunch of pedophile priests, who refuse to ordain women, telling us that we can't decide with our Dr's consultation. Ain't that grand-- NOT.

What a bunch of hateful men.

Hysterectomies are not performed for sterilization purposes - a tubal ligation will accomplish that purpose. A hysterectomy is performed for medical purposes with sterilization as a secondary result.

I am not Catholic and don't purport to understand the Church's position but geez......

as well as a population issue. In Latin American countries they went heavy on this because the more people the more money.

Let's apply Hanlon's Razor and take the Church's teachings at face value.

The Catholic Church takes the position that the only legitimate reason for sex is procreation. If you assume that position, the teaching against birth control is a obvious result. However, the Church does not forbid sex for infertile couples. If a person is rendered infertile - by result of injury or medically necessary procedure - s/he is not forbidden to engage in marital sex.

I suspect that the Church does not understand that hysterectomies are not performed for sterilization purposes.

As one born and raised I can tell you the church is/has been as calculating as Machiavelli. They know full well the purpose of hysterectomies but their dogma is used as a control mechanism. And frankly, what's in the best interests of people has never been their priority. Hence priests were allowed to abuse children and protected, nuns allowed to abuse unwed, pregnant mothers, take their babies and even at times kill them. They grew rich encouraging parents in Latin countries to have children they couldn't afford to feed and then expected the parents to tithe to the church.

As someone up thread mentioned...a bunch of men in long robes and finery, living lavish lifestyles telling women what is and should be with their bodies.

to assign stupidity to the Vatican and it is a question often posed about INdividual 1, but with the church, I feel quite confident assigning self-interest to their motives. Most of the church hierarchy operates with disdain where women are concerned and do not regard them as equals. It's a boys club, one which enjoys wealth.

Men controlling women, sitting in judgment on them, controlling reproduction.
Makes me sick.

I’m from a large Catholic family, oldest of eight. I have more than 65 first cousins. I saw first hand the burden women have in this environment. I decided at a young age not to marry, then the birth control pill came along. Yay!

One aunt had such severe post-Parton depression that she often had to be institutionalized yet she had eight more children. Others just barely managed with nearly constant depression.
