It's time to take John Wayne's name off the Orange County airport
Most people familiar with the life story of John Wayne are aware that the late movie star was a dyed-in-the-wool right-winger after all, he was still making a movie glorifying Americas conduct of the Vietnam War (The Green Berets, 1968) well after the country had begun to get sick of the conflict.
But the resurrection of a 1971 interview Wayne gave to Playboy magazine has underscored the sheer crudeness of the actors feelings about gay people, black people, Native Americans, young people and liberals.
This doesnt necessarily mean that its impossible or immoral to enjoy Westerns and war movies starring John Wayne; thats a personal choice. But it certainly undermines any justification for his name and image to adorn a civic facility.
I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility.
Were talking about Orange Countys John Wayne Airport. Its long past the time that Waynes name should come down.

(4,602 posts)Airports are the worst and no one is actually honored by having their name attached to one.

F*** John Wayne, that name should come down.
We're probably stuck with Reagan Airport, cause he was a POTUS, but Wayne's name doesn't need to be on SHIT in the way of public facilities. Prick.

Reagan National Airport in DC is an outrage. This is the nation's airport, and it already had the name of a President, namely George Washington. Rename the Orange County Airport for Reagan and get rid of the nonsense of naming National Airport after a second-rate (AT BEST) person.

(183,043 posts)I think it was a David Corn book that ripped apart how the right had a coordinated effort to create icons mostly to counter the legacies of JFK and FDR. John Wayne was central to this. He was of the once mighty and powerful money sources of the GOP. Orange County. Reagan came out of there. George Laffer too, I think.

(15,682 posts)my father came here for the John Birch Society. Really crazy ultra conservatives who found even Republicans too liberal for them. My father would love today's republican party. At least the racists. The sexual perverts, no.
It took some years but we actually finally turned the county blue, if only light blue. But for years I would tell people that I was here for that very reason. To turn this country blue. It has now become friendly enough to want to live here. Lol.

(8,747 posts)The interview is 47 years old, and Wayne died 40 years ago. So what is the point?
Are people going to dig into the background of every famous person looking for shit?
Something is definitely going on, the question is what?
