The Death Of Local News Is Making Us Dumber And More Divided

Local journalism simply isn’t what it used to be.

It began with the death of your local hometown newspaper. It’s been compounded by an online media industry that’s too busy laying off existing reporters to spend much time expanding local reporting. Now the last bastion of local journalism, local TV broadcasters, are increasingly being hoovered up by giant companies for which real journalism isn't much of a priority.

A new joint study out of Stanford and Emory University indicates that this shift is having a profoundly-negative impact on the American public, public discourse, and the democratic process. The researchers found that the erosion of quality local reporting is not only leaving America less informed, but more divided than ever before.
The full study, now peer-reviewed and published this week in the American Political Science Review, took a specific interest in Sinclair Broadcasting, which has been under fire in recent years for hoovering up the nation’s local broadcasters, then replacing their already-shaky local reporting with what many argue is little more than glorified propaganda.

Sinclair’s policy of forcing these local broadcasters to air homogenized, facts-optional “must run” segments went viral last year when Deadspin illustrated what this looks like in practice.

Have been a subscriber to my local paper forever. When my subscription runs out I am not renewing. I will miss the local news and sports. I will no longer be able to look at the obits to see if my name is there but I don't need the aggravation.

They added a column by Ann Coulter to go along with their other right wing dick heads. They do have like one column by a liberal.

When I drop them I am not going quietly. I am going to personally go to the newspaper and let them know why. I am going to write a blistering letter to the editor which I hope they publish. I used to regularly write letters to the editor but I stopped trying to argue with people who are zombies. I am going out with a bang.

I watch mostly MSNBC and movies. I read DU every day.

I feel that I am as informed about national and world events as most. I don't know shit about what is going on in town.

The evening news is the only news on TV I watch regularly. They are also the only station in town, that when they talk about my VERY nice neighborhood, they don't make it sound like they risked their lives for footage from the ghetto.

Seems there was no cat rescued from a tree story that they wouldn't cover. Plus, there was the daily McDonald's story -- this is Chicago and may be the location of their corporate headquarters, but does a new menu item really need reporting?

At least there's no Sinclair station in this market so far.

But the "casual" local news format gkes back to the 70s. It has only gotten worse. I do not want to hear about what the anchors had for dinner or hear their ridiculous bad jokes on the news thank you.

if it bleeds it leads. That is always the lead story followed by some stupid Dog or Cat Story, next it is a story of something happening in the School District, followed by the local Weather forecast .

Nothing about Elected Officals double and triple dipping Jobs. Nothing about our massive Homeless issues. Nothing about the 33k School Kids living on the Streets or in Cars or Couch Surfing. Nothing about how our Area Media is owned and Controlled by one Family in order to prevent anything negative about him or his family.

The Gannett Family destroyed the Newspaper Industry and Sinclair is destroying the Electronic News industry. Ironic as it is,the Gannett Family is looking for a buyer of their so called Portfolio. Gee whiz, hmmm.

I have seen it turn to shit over the years. I call and email regularly when I think they are being biased.

We read the local and area papers, too. There used to be good papers who represented both sides of an issue. Not any more. We have to fight to get our point of view out there.

We still read them because we need some local news. Because we are subscribers, we get attention for our views and criticisms. The paper has left some Democrats on staff, because we have become more vocal about things.
