The last thing anyone needed at the Golden Globes was Ricky Gervais to reprimand them..

Very good commentary about the hypocrisy of Ricky Gervais...

Review: Politics reigned at the Golden Globes. Too bad Ricky Gervais didn’t notice

Forget the escapist magic of Hollywood. Nihilism was the name of the game when host Ricky Gervais opened the Golden Globes on Sunday night with a gloom-and-doom monologue so cynical it made the effervescent Tom Hanks scowl.
"Let's go out with a bang. Let's have a laugh at your expense," said the snarky British comedian to the crowd of A-listers who'd looked eager to get the party started until hestepped onstage. "Remember, they're just jokes. We're all gonna die soon and there's no sequel, so remember that."
The 58-year-old former Golden Globe winner (The Office) and five-time host also flippantly reminded the packed room that, "No one cares about movies anymore," and advised, "If you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech. You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world." ...

Gervais' disingenuous call for an apolitical evening was also answered by Russell Crowe — in absentia — when he won for actor in a limited series or TV movie for Showtime's Roger Ailes docudrama "The Loudest Voice." ...

He was brutally honest as to Hollywood’s hypocrisy as to turning a blind eye to Weinstein and the corporate influence/profit over the good for the people.

He was roasting, telling jokes and uncomfortable truths. The right is using it as if it was serious political commentary not realizing he absolutely crushes them on a regular basis. The left is mad that he would dare call them out on certain things. But it was all jokes, sarcastic, tongue in cheek, irreverent and clever. Jokes. And damn good ones too.

I thought he was great.

put it best. Nobody will remember this stupid awards show, Ricky's monologue, or the acceptance speeches...

It’s pretty hypocritical to use your award show platform as a celebrity to make a political statement against celebrities using their platform to make political statements.

Too bad they don’t hand out statues for irony or being self-serving.

I'd rather hear what Patricia Arquette had to say than have someone tell her to STFU before she even speaks. Anyone telling everyone else to STFU needs to stop and think about the irony in what they are saying.

These comments need to be put in the context of Ellen DeGeneres statements after laughing it up with Bush. Either these people are influencers or not. If they are then they are responsible for their public actions and statements. If they are not, then Ricky is right. Say thanks and move on.

comments. He was right on and I noticed neither Cook or Apple had anything to say about it, proving there's little argue against the truth..

Interesting tweet from Ricky. He reframes his admonition in less censory terms. Which is of course very different from what he said and more like Patricia Arquette's speech...

Peter Hart of FAIR puts it best.
