The worst wildfires in Australia’s recent history, which have been burning since September, are finally getting global attention.

So should Rupert Murdoch’s role in all this.

In the face of a climate crisis, the media mogul’s newspapers in Australia have been spreading myths like wildfire, too. Even now, they’re busy peddling the utterly false notion that environmentalists are opposing measures to control these fires, and exaggerating the role of arson.

...“The Murdoch media, determined to remove the Labor government at any cost, mounted a savage war on the science of climate change and the structural reforms that needed to be undertaken,” wrote Australia’s former Labor Treasurer, Wayne Swan, in a 2017 article.

The leaders of both our countries will continue to downplay climate change. They will recruit fossil fuel lobbyists for government jobs, cling to the use of coal, hide out in Hawaii or Mar-a-Lago and insist that they don’t need to do more. And they can thank Murdoch’s propaganda machine for providing them cover, shifting the blame to various bogeymen, and doing everything in its power to divert our attention.
