Trump lawyers accidentally make case for impeachment

I read the reply to the impeachment articles from the President’s legal team, and it is a meticulous argument explaining why the President should be immediately acquitted.

What caught my attention, though, was page 34, where the president’s lawyers give an example of what a proper impeachment would look like. It says impeachment was intended for a President caught “secretly bending laws to favor the rich and powerful,” and goes on to quote the Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause, which forbids the acceptance of things of value from foreigners.

And I said, wait a minute – whose side are these lawyers on? Because President Trump right now is being sued in federal court for doing just that – for continuing to own hotels in foreign countries, which every day accept money from rich and powerful people, a little like Hunter Biden did.

There is in fact evidence that the president does see bribes as a legitimate business tool. In fact he’s been pushing to let US companies legally pay bribes since this interview with CNBC in 2012:

“Every other country goes into these places and they do what they have to do,” he said. “It’s a horrible law and it should be changed.”

He was trying to get election help from a foreign government. According to election laws, that's something of value.!
